Asher miraculously survived, but Kasidy suffered a traumatic brain injury and remains in a coma. As she fights to wake up, her family is preparing for the long road to recovery ahead.<\/p>\n
\u201cTo know that my 3-year-old nephew might not ever hear his mom\u2019s voice again… just because somebody wanted to get somewhere a little bit faster than they should have,\u201d said Stewart\u2019s sister, Krystal Allen. <\/p>\n

During the crash, Stewart\u2019s truck entered a ditch and struck a metal bar that prevented the vehicle from colliding with nearby trees.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey actually hit a bar that was in the ditch that did not break away,\u201d Allen said. \u201cThey found that stuck in the motor, and it about split the front of the truck in half.\u201d <\/p>\n
While Asher suffered a broken femur, Allen believes the location of his car seat is the only reason he is still here.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf he would have been where we normally put him, he wouldn\u2019t be with us today,\u201d Allen said.<\/p>\n
Asher\u2019s recovery, marked by smiles and laughter in his hospital bed, has become the family\u2019s main source of strength.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe\u2019s just a blessing to everybody,\u201d Allen said. \u201cTo be able to hear him laugh and know that he\u2019s okay is huge for our family.\u201d<\/p>\n
The tragedy comes just as Stewart was starting nursing school with goals of becoming a pediatric nurse practitioner. Her drive to help children is deeply personal; eight years ago, Stewart lost her daughter to a rare chromosome disorder just before her second birthday.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s just really been her drive is her kids,\u201d Allen said. \u201cDriving her to help others and be there for others like people were there for her during her times.\u201d<\/p>\n
Stewart is currently stable and breathing on her own. She has been moved out of the intensive care unit and is being transferred to a neurorehabilitation facility in Austin to begin her rehabilitation.<\/p>\n
The investigation into the exact cause of the crash remains ongoing. <\/p>\n
