The El Paso Fire Department opened a new central fire station July 9. The new facility, located at 201 South Florence St., opened its station doors to the public, offering tours, emergency response demonstrations and information about joining the Fire Department to attendees.<\/p>\n

The $23 million station is part of a larger public safety bond approved by voters in 2019 and consolidates Fire Stations 1, 9 and 11. The new central station will service Downtown and South El Paso and will also house specialized rescue teams that will respond to emergencies throughout the West Texas area.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were able to bring all these companies into one centralized location to reduce response times,\u201d El Paso Fire Chief Jonathan Killings said. \u201cWe\u2019re centrally located, so they have quick access to I-10, quick access to the border highway, and we can get out to the far reaches of our district rapidly in order to continue to provide the response that the citizens of El Paso deserve.\u201d<\/p>\n

The El Paso Fire Department worked closely with firefighters when designing the building to make sure their needs are met, and they get the best use out of the space possible.<\/p>\n

The 28,000 square foot station is equipped with 10 apparatus bays for emergency vehicles, a two-story living and sleeping quarters section, fitness and training facilities, a food preparation and service area, restrooms with showers, a command center, a decontamination area and personal protective equipment storage.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tFollowing initial approval in 2019 and two years of construction beginning in 2024, the El Paso Fire Department held its grand opening on Thursday, July 9, 2026. The event offered a chance for members of the community to tour the facility while also showcasing equipment and vehicles used.\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n

The building showcases two art pieces that are visible from the exterior of the building. A 30-foot mural named Heroes of the El Paso Fire Department, done by artist Babak Tavokoli, can be seen on the station staircase, and an art piece named El Paso\u2019s Golden Light by artists Brad Oldham and Christy Coltrin wraps around the front of the station.<\/p>\n

In addition to the public art, the station highlights the work of its community through its beautiful architectural design, and all who worked on the project were honored during the station opening ceremony.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tPosing for photos with community members of all shapes, sizes and even species, fire mascots Sparky and his partner Sparkle made an appearance for the grand opening and ribbon-cutting of the new Central Fire Station. The Fire Hounds partook in the ceremony as they greeted guests and stopped for pictures.\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is part of my legacy, building my business and an example to my children,\u201d structural metal worker for the station, Alexander Gonzalez said. \u201cThis building\u2019s gonna be here forever, so it feels good to be a part of history, especially on a one-of-a-kind building for the city.\u201d<\/p>\n

The opening of the new Central Fire Station in Downtown El Paso reflects the City of El Paso and the El Paso Fire Department\u2019s commitment to public safety and connection to the city.<\/p>\n
