One of the most important and least glamorous positions on the defense is defensive tackle. They handle the dirty work, rarely get the spotlight, and their individual stats often fail to capture their impact. With Albert Regis and Tyler Onyedim gone, the Aggies entered 2026 with a significant void in the middle of the line. The staff responded with key transfer additions and a wave of young talent.

But when it comes to experience, familiarity with the system, and staff trust, senior DJ Hicks stands out. Through three seasons, Hicks has been solid in a rotational role, even if he hasn’t fully lived up to his No. 1 defensive line ranking coming out of high school. The flashes have always been there; the consistency hasn’t. After a strong offseason, he’s now viewed as one of the unit’s potential breakout players.

If Hicks delivers the growth the staff expects, he could answer a lot of questions in the heart of the defensive line and stabilize a position undergoing major transition.

Preseason Player ProfileHometown: Katy, TexasHeight: 6-3Weight: 293 lbs.Class in 2026: SeniorNeed a news break? Losing Regis and Onyedim hurts, but DJ Hicks has a clear chance to step into a bigger role. He only started a few games last year, yet the talent is obvious and he already knows the system. Expect this group to settle on true starters around midseason, but Hicks will be on the field plenty from Day 1.

Photo Gallery Contact/Follow us @AggiesWire on X and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Texas A&M news, notes, and opinions.
