The Dallas Cowboys<\/a> are losing edge rusher Jadeveon Clowney<\/a>, but the state of Texas isn\u2019t.<\/p>\n The veteran edge rusher and former No. 1 overall pick is returning to the team where his career started after agreeing to a contract with the Houston Texans \u2014 a team with arguably the NFL\u2019s best defense.<\/p>\n \u201cReunion: The Texans are signing their own former No. 1 overall pick Jadeveon Clowney,\u201d NFL Network\u2019s Ian Rapoport wrote<\/a> on his official X account on Sunday. \u201cClowney, who played last year for the Cowboys, stays in his hometown to play \u2026 The Texans add the top edge available, bolstering one of the NFL\u2019s best defenses. Rich get richer.\u201d<\/p>\n Clowney led the Cowboys with 8.5 sacks in 2025 while playing in just 13 games and was on the field for just 31.4 percent of his team\u2019s defensive snaps.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s a $5.5 million base value for Jadeveon Clowney and a maximum value of $8 million, per a league source, for three-time Pro Bowl pass rusher with Texans,\u201d NFL reporter Aaron Wilson wrote<\/a> on his official X account.\u00a0<\/p>\n Clowney Firmly in Mercenary Stage of Career<\/p>\n Bleacher Report\u2019s Kristopher Knox<\/a> doesn\u2019t think Clowney will be unemployed for much longer after he played for the Cowboys on a 1-year, $3.45 million contract in 2025.<\/p>\n That\u2019s a lot of production for not a lot of money, in\u00a0NFL<\/a>\u00a0terms.<\/p>\n Knox called the 2 teams that played in the Super Bowl in February \u2014 the\u00a0New England Patriots<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Seattle Seahawks<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 the 2 most logical landing spots for Clowney.<\/p>\n It ended up being a different contender.<\/p>\n \u201cFor any teams looking to add a defensive mercenary just before training camp, Jadeveon Clowney is\u00a0the\u00a0perfect target,\u201d Knox wrote on July 19. \u201cWhile Clowney never became the franchise centerpiece the\u00a0Houston Texans<\/a> hoped they were getting when they drafted him first overall back in 2014. However, he\u2019s been a very productive player throughout his career, often during short-term stints. This past season, for example, Clowney joined the Dallas Cowboys for 13 games and finished with 12 tackles for loss, 8.5 sacks, and 22 quarterback pressures. He isn\u2019t just a situational edge-rusher, either, and remains a very disruptive force against the run \u2026 Clowney would help just about any defense looking to bolster its front, though he might have the most impact by landing with one of the many franchises that can offer a preexisting coaching connection.\u201d<\/p>\n Cowboys Left Scrambling Following 2025 Trade<\/p>\n The Cowboys brought Clowney in to try to fill the void left when they traded NFL All-Pro edge rusher\u00a0Micah Parsons<\/a>\u00a0to the\u00a0Green Bay Packers<\/a>\u00a0before the 2025 season.<\/p>\n Clowney showed he still has some tread left on the tires even though he wasn\u2019t even signed until September 14.<\/p>\n \u201cThe\u00a0Cowboys<\/a>\u2018 defense post-Micah Parsons is a work in progress, but the team has some hope that reinforcements are on the way,\u201d\u00a0ESPN\u2019s Dan Graziano<\/a>\u00a0wrote on September 18. \u201cThe signing\u00a0of veteran edge rusher\u00a0Jadeveon Clowney<\/a>\u00a0should help bolster the front while Dallas awaits health improvements on the back end.\u201d<\/p>\n Those improvements never came as the Cowboys finished the season 7-9-1, missed the playoffs for the 2nd consecutive season, and had the NFL\u2019s worst defense.<\/p>\n \n\t\t\tTony Adame<\/a> covers the NFL for Heavy.com, with a focus on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Washington Commanders, Dallas Cowboys, Baltimore Ravens, Philadelphia Eagles and Denver Broncos.
