Marc Stein of The Stein Line added the structure: The deal starts at $18.2 million in 2027-28 and declines in each subsequent season, to $17.3 million in 2028-29 and $16.7 million in 2029-30.

The raise is enormous relative to where Marshall stood a day ago. He was entering the final season of his original Dallas contract at $9.4 million, meaning the Mavericks nearly doubled his annual salary after the best statistical season of his career.

Through 52 games as of mid-February, Marshall was averaging 15.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.0 steals per game while shooting 53.1 percent from the field — production that made him one of the most coveted role players in the league at the deadline.

Dallas turned away trade overtures for Marshall all season and views the extension as a statement that the 28-year-old forward is part of the long-term core being assembled around Cooper Flagg.

The Lakers’ Pursuit That Never Had a Chance

Lakers fans have seen Marshall’s name in their team’s rumor cycle for the better part of a year, and the interest was real. Ahead of the February deadline, Dan Woike of The Athletic reported that Marshall was among the wings drawing attention from the Lakers’ front office — while noting in the same breath that any deal between these two franchises faced a unique obstacle.

The pathways to a Dallas trade, Woike wrote, “have gigantic ‘road closed’ signs all over them” in the aftermath of the Luka Doncic blockbuster.

That February reporting sketched the whole shape of the Lakers’ wing problem. Woike noted the front office had been connected to nearly every defensive wing available — Herbert Jones, Trey Murphy III, Derrick Jones Jr. and Isaac Okoro among them — while showing consistent reluctance to compromise the 2027 cap flexibility it has guarded all along.

The deadline ended with the Lakers landing Luke Kennard as their wing addition rather than any of the defensive-minded targets, and the Marshall thread was left dangling into the summer.

It kept some life through the spring. ESPN’s Kevin Pelton listed Marshall among the logical Dallas trade targets for the Lakers this offseason, reasoning that a front office no longer run by Nico Harrison might eventually be willing to do business with Los Angeles again. The extension is Dallas’s answer to that theory, and it is not the answer the Lakers wanted.

The Trade-Eligibility Wrinkle — and Why It Changes Little

There is one technical caveat worth understanding before anyone declares this door welded shut. Salary cap analyst Yossi Gozlan noted that “Naji Marshall remains trade-eligible based on this structure,” because the deal fits within the league’s extend-and-trade limits — the starting salary sits under the allowable threshold and the annual declines stay within five percent.

It looks like Naji Marshall remains trade-eligible based on this structure.

$18,195,000 is the most he can get within extend-and-trade limits, which is 120 percent of the estimated average salary.

And the annual declines are all 5 percent or fewer.https://t.co/qKBtz1Aw82

— Yossi Gozlan (@YossiGozlan) August 2, 2026

In plain terms, Dallas did not trigger the six-month trade restriction that a richer or steeper extension would have carried, so the Mavericks retain the ability to move Marshall at any point.

Retaining the ability and having the inclination are different things. Everything in the reporting around this deal points the other way: Stein described a franchise that resisted interest in Marshall all year and paid specifically to keep him next to Flagg, and nothing about the past 18 months suggests Dallas would make the Lakers the exception if it ever did soften.

The eligibility note matters mostly as a bookmark — if the Mavericks’ situation changes dramatically by the 2027 deadline, Marshall’s contract will not be the obstacle. The relationship between the two front offices almost certainly will be.

Where the Lakers’ Forward Search Turns Now

The practical takeaway in Los Angeles is that the external market for a starting-caliber forward got thinner on a night the Lakers did nothing at all. The pattern of this offseason has been steady in that respect, with targets coming off the board one by one while the front office holds its financial line — a dynamic that has defined the team’s summer far more than any single miss.

Marshall would have checked nearly every box the remaining opening calls for: positional size, point-of-attack defense, secondary creation and a preexisting relationship with Doncic from their season and a half together in Dallas. With him committed elsewhere, the realistic paths run through the mechanisms the front office has preserved rather than the names it once circled — and through the internal group of Ziaire Williams, Matisse Thybulle and the second-year wings competing for the minutes this fall.

None of that constitutes a crisis, and the front office would argue the discipline is the point. But the list of two-way forwards who fit the Lakers’ timeline, price tolerance and roster math was never long, and Sunday it lost one of its best names to the one team least likely to ever pick up the phone.

The Lakers’ forward answer, whenever it arrives, now looks a little more likely to come from inside the building — or from a market that has not opened yet.

The Dallas Mavericks made a decision about their forward rotation Sunday night, and it doubled as a decision…

[9
102,104,2582,103,6393,31208
post-396172","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-dallas","tag-dallas","tag-dallas-headlines","tag-dallas-mavericks","tag-dallas-news","tag-los-angeles-lakers","tag-naji-marshall
["GET
