Greg Abbott appointed the hard-right, former state senator to lead the office as it oversees Texas\u2019 launch of a $1 billion school voucher program.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Former state Sen. Don Huffines adopted his new role as Texas\u2019 chief financial officer after a swearing-in ceremony Saturday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gov.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/directory.texastribune.org\/greg-abbott\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/directory.texastribune.org\/greg-abbott\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Greg Abbott<\/a>\u00a0temporarily\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2026\/07\/02\/texas-comptroller-greg-abbott-appoints-don-huffines\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">appointed Huffines<\/a>, 68, after the hardline conservative and businessman from the Dallas area won the Republican nomination earlier this year. He faces Democratic state\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/directory.texastribune.org\/sarah-eckhardt\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/directory.texastribune.org\/sarah-eckhardt\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sen. Sarah Eckhardt<\/a>\u00a0in November for a full four-year term.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Huffines steps into the role as the Texas comptroller\u2019s office oversees the state\u2019s launch of a $1 billion school voucher program in which families can use public dollars for private schooling.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Huffines thanked Abbott for having confidence in him for the appointment as well as for the governor\u2019s conservative leadership that spurred a thriving economy for Texas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am grateful for the opportunity to serve alongside him as we continue building an even brighter future for our state,\u201d he said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Huffines is refusing a salary, as the real estate developer did while serving in the Texas Senate from 2015 to 2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Huffines lost his seat in the Legislature in 2018 and four years later unsuccessfully challenged Abbott in the Republican primary, running to the governor\u2019s right.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In March 2025, former Comptroller\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2025\/03\/07\/texas-am-system-chancellor-glenn-hegar\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Glenn Hegar<\/a>\u00a0left the office to become chancellor of Texas A&amp;M University System. Abbott then appointed former state Sen.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2026\/07\/01\/texas-comptroller-kelly-hancock-resigns-greg-abbott-don-huffines\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kelly Hancock<\/a>\u00a0as acting comptroller. Soon after losing to Huffines in the GOP primary,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/directory.texastribune.org\/kelly-hancock\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/directory.texastribune.org\/kelly-hancock\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hancock<\/a>\u00a0announced his resignation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Saturday marks Huffines\u2019 return to public office after a more than seven-year hiatus. During that time, he remained active on the hard right of Texas GOP politics, launching a conservative policy organization.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Abbott said in a statement that Huffines\u2019 \u201cprivate-sector experience and dedication to limited government make him exceptionally qualified to lead the state\u2019s finances and protect every taxpayer dollar with integrity and accountability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Huffines is the founder of Huffines Communities, one of the largest residential real estate development firms in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
