AUSTIN, Texas \u2014 Gov. Greg Abbott has directed Texas energy regulators<\/a> to conduct a comprehensive audit of all data center projects seeking to connect to the state’s power grid before any new facilities are approved.<\/p>\n

Abbott announced Monday that the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT) and the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) must complete the review of all data centers advancing through ERCOT’s interconnection process. Any project that fails to comply with requirements established by the PUCT, ERCOT, and state law will be denied access to the Texas grid.<\/p>\n

“Our top priority is to protect Texans’ safety and quality of life,” Abbott said in a statement. “Any project that fails to comply with the requirements set forth by the PUCT and ERCOT, and by state law, must be denied connection to the Texas grid. Simply put, Texans must come first.”<\/p>\n

According to the governor’s office, ERCOT is currently reviewing more than 474 gigawatts of requests to connect to the Texas grid\u2014more than five times the state’s record peak electricity demand. About 90% of those requests come from data center projects.<\/p>\n

Abbott said the unprecedented demand could threaten the reliability and stability of the state’s electric grid.<\/p>\n

Building on a directive issued June 10, the governor also instructed the PUCT and ERCOT to gather additional information from each proposed data center, including whether projects are receiving state or local financial incentives, how much electricity and water they expect to use, whether they plan to generate power on-site, and what measures they will take to reduce impacts on surrounding communities.<\/p>\n

The review will also examine proposed water sources, cooling technologies, noise and traffic mitigation plans, emergency response coordination, and ownership information for each project.<\/p>\n

The governor’s office said the audit must be completed before any data center project moves forward in the ERCOT interconnection process.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"AUSTIN, Texas \u2014 Gov.
