Dining tables, mirrors, lamps \u2014 Jaquese Jones knew she could sell items like those on Facebook Marketplace.<\/p>\n

These foods, often cooked at home, have recently gone viral as people post their Marketplace food hauls on TikTok and Instagram.<\/p>\n Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n MORE FOOD NEWS: Houston institution Barbecue Inn closing after 80 years<\/a><\/p>\n Local influencers such as\u00a0@houstonsgotspice<\/a> and @hungry_inhouston<\/a> have hopped on the trend. So did Jordan Bentley, of Los Angeles-based account Jordan Bentley Eats; he accumulated more than 250,000 views on a\u00a020-minute YouTube video<\/a> about Facebook Marketplace\u2019s food offerings in Houston.<\/p>\n \u201cI got introduced to it because of the trend, and I was like, \u2018Oh, this will probably get some good views,\u2019\u201d Bentley said. \u201cAnd then I started seeing how it was really impacting people’s lives and helping their businesses.\u201d<\/p>\n He sampled oxtails, jambalaya, lamb chops and a spicy seafood bowl, among other foods, highlighting the cooks in his video.<\/p>\n Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n With the\u00a0cyclospora outbreak all over the news, Bentley said he thought briefly about food safety issues. But he doesn’t want to worry too much, especially since he feels like there’s a risk to eating out anywhere.<\/p>\n \u201cYou have some people who are like, \u2018Oh, this is illegal,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cI’m just like, man, stop knocking people trying to make a living for themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n The Houston Health Department did not respond to a request for comment on the trend. Many but not all Facebook\u00a0Marketplace sellers make their food at home, and Texas law regulates<\/a> what kinds of foods can be cooked and sold from a home kitchen. Meat is not allowed.<\/p>\n Jones, who cooks under the name Chef Jay<\/a>, said she used to prepare her fried chicken and biscuits\u00a0at home, but she just transitioned into a commercial kitchen on Westheimer. Jones featured in a Houston influencer’s video about Facebook Marketplace foods, and since then, she said people have messaged her \u201cleft and right” to order the same things.<\/p>\n Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n Jones isn’t afraid to sample other Marketplace finds, either. Recently, she picked up a box of tropical punch-flavored candied grapes: \u201cfresh\u201d and \u201cso good,\u201d she said. She wants to support other vendors in her shoes.<\/p>\n \u201cWe don’t have a chance, because we don’t have the resources that these big restaurants have,\u201d she said. \u201cWe have to take matters into our own hands to be successful.\u201d<\/p>\n Itaty Medrano, the owner of desserts business Treats by Taty<\/a>, started out in a position like that. A stay-at-home mom, she began her business with chocolate-covered strawberries for Valentine\u2019s Day in 2022. Since then, she\u2019s expanded into custom cakes and birthday treats, plus\u00a0viral dot cakes<\/a>, selling them through word of mouth or Facebook Marketplace.<\/p>\n The platform,\u00a0Medrano thinks, is an easy, convenient and cheaper way to pick up food nearby. And though she herself hasn\u2019t bought food there, she sees the appeal of the trend.<\/p>\n Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n \u201cThere are so many people that cannot afford to get a storefront,\u201d she said. \u201cSo they start off at home, and they make really good stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
