HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A new report from city and county health leaders revealed the biggest challenges keeping people in Houston and Harris County from getting the health care they need.<\/p>\n
The 2026 Access to Care Report from Harris County Public Health and the Houston Health Department took a closer look at barriers like affordability and the challenges patients face even after they find a provider.<\/p>\n
The report found that simply finding care is one of the biggest obstacles.<\/p>\n
Some areas, specifically in northeast Harris County, don’t have enough providers. The report said that patients deal with long waits, limited appointment availability and, in some cases, lengthy drives for basic care.<\/p>\n
To bridge those gaps, health leaders recommended expanding the use of community health workers, which are people who help patients enroll in benefits, schedule appointments and navigate available services.<\/p>\n
Paying for care remains another significant hurdle.<\/p>\n
The report said even insured patients often face high out-of-pocket costs, coverage gaps and limited financial assistance. Officials recommended expanding enrollment in programs like Medicaid and Harris Health’s financial assistance program.<\/p>\n
Even after patients get through the door, receiving care isn’t always easy.<\/p>\n
The report highlighted language barriers, low health literacy and cultural mistrust.<\/p>\n
Health officials stressed the importance of interpreters being able to make sure key health information is understood by the patient, as well as receiving cultural awareness training to help improve communication.<\/p>\n
