{"id":398436,"date":"2026-08-05T16:04:07","date_gmt":"2026-08-05T16:04:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/398436\/"},"modified":"2026-08-05T16:04:07","modified_gmt":"2026-08-05T16:04:07","slug":"civil-rights-groups-opening-investigation-into-austin-police-after-teens-killing-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/398436\/","title":{"rendered":"Civil rights groups opening investigation into Austin police after teen&#8217;s killing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>AUSTIN, Texas  \u2014 Several civil-rights groups say they are opening a formal human and civil-rights investigation into the Austin Police Department and other Central Texas law enforcement agencies, nearly two weeks after three Austin police officers shot and <a href=\"https:\/\/cbsaustin.com\/news\/local\/suspect-fatally-shot-by-officer-in-northeast-austin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">killed 17-year-old Anthoneil Williams II.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The shooting happened July 24 at a neighborhood park near Baden Lane and Arborside Drive in Northeast Austin. Police responded to a <a href=\"https:\/\/cbsaustin.com\/news\/local\/transcript-details-911-call-before-17-year-old-was-shot-by-austin-police\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">911 call<\/a> reporting a teenager possibly holding a gun. Investigators later determined the call came from Williams\u2019 own phone.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cbsaustin.com\/news\/local\/transcript-details-911-call-before-17-year-old-was-shot-by-austin-police\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">PREVIOUS COVERAGE | Transcript details 911 call before 17-year-old was shot by Austin police<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Police say officers ordered Williams to show his hands. Video shows Williams lifting his shirt, reaching toward his waistband, then extending his hands toward officers. Three officers opened fire. Police later found a water bottle, not a gun.<\/p>\n<p>The shooting has sparked anger and debate across Austin.
