Judge Erin Sokol granted a request Wednesday to have the defendant, Cameron Burton, undergo a third and final mental health evaluation before he enters a plea. Burton\u2019s first evaluation deemed him competent, but the defense raised concerns about whether the defendant\u2019s noncompliance during his first two evaluations was due to an undetermined mental health issue.<\/p>\n
Sokol said allowing a third examination was unusual, but she wanted to avoid moving forward with someone who wasn\u2019t competent, though she did say she thought Burton likely was.<\/p>\n
Deputy District Attorney Shelby Crow pointed to Burton\u2019s first exam as evidence that he was faking incompetence.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think this is him deciding that he does not want to participate rather than being unable to,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
But defense attorney William Patrick disagreed, noting that Burton appeared in court Wednesday handcuffed to a wheelchair and without shoes.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf you are not compliant, you will be found competent,\u201d Sokol told Burton. <\/p>\n
Burton, 33, is accused of shooting and killing Yetzabel Quinones, a former U.S. Army sergeant who served as a military police officer, Army records show. She was deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq, each for a year.<\/p>\n

During her service, from April 2008 to October 2015, she was awarded the Army Commendation Medal three times and the Meritorious Unit Commendation twice.<\/p>\n
Quinones, 38, was found inside her apartment in the Stratmoor Hills area on Oct. 31, 2025. Burton was arrested Nov. 11, 2025.<\/p>\n
El Paso County Sheriff\u2019s Office investigators tied Burton to the crime through surveillance footage and friends of Quinones, who told detectives that she had a suspicious neighbor whom she caught messing with her doorbell camera before the shooting.<\/p>\n
Investigators believe Burton tried to hide evidence, documenting in his arrest affidavit a \u201cstrong odor\u201d of cleaning agents inside Quinones\u2019 apartment and burned clothing found inside a trash can they believed was worn during the killing.<\/p>\n
Burton is being held at the El Paso County jail on a no-bond hold, records show.<\/p>\n
He faces several charges, including first-degree murder, burglary and tampering with evidence. <\/p>\n
