20-year-old dies hours after 11-year-old brother in unprovoked shooting<\/a><\/p>\nBexar County investigators say 40-year-old Daniel Antonio Perez crossed the street from his home and opened fire on the brothers as they were outside their family’s residence shortly after 7:30 p.m. near U.S. Highway 90 and Loop 1604. Authorities say there was no known history between the families and no apparent provocation for the attack.<\/p>\n
Perez has been charged with two counts of capital murder and four counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. His bond has been set at $2.3 million.<\/p>\n
For Perales, the investigation offers little comfort.<\/p>\n
He remembers his sons as hard-working young men who spent nearly every day by his side.<\/p>\n
“We worked,” he said. “Working, barbecuing, checking out the radio, watching movies, movie nights.”<\/p>\n
Perales said Drayden worked alongside him in the family business and never stopped trying to help, even after months of serious health problems.<\/p>\n
“Before the DKA … he was just a normal kid trying to get his life together,” Perales said. “Even though it wasn’t much, he would still try.”<\/p>\n
He said Maliki was known for his kind heart.<\/p>\n
He was a real loving boy,” Perales said. “He just always gave hugs. Got awards for it, too.<\/p>\n
The moments leading up to the shooting still haunt him.<\/p>\n
Perales said the family had asked his sons to move their vehicle because it was partially blocking the sidewalk. Moments later, one of the boys called to say a man across the street was staring at them.<\/p>\n
“I hear pops,” Perales recalled. “My wife starts screaming.”<\/p>\n
He grabbed his gun and ran outside.<\/p>\n
I tripped over him,” he said, describing finding one of his sons on the ground. “The guy was across the street reloading, started to shoot again.<\/p>\n
Perales said he tried desperately to save his youngest son.<\/p>\n
“I tried to perform CPR,” he said. “I can’t run… but I ran.”<\/p>\n
Hours later, he learned he had lost both of his boys.<\/p>\n
“My oldest boy… he died at 9:03 this morning,” Perales said. “Twelve hours later, he just finally went.”<\/p>\n
The grief has been overwhelming.<\/p>\n
“I don’t even know how I’m gonna bury him,” Perales said. “I don’t know how I want to carry on. I don’t know what I’m gonna do.”<\/p>\n
One moment has become especially painful.<\/p>\n
The family had recently ordered Maliki a new pair of shoes for school. They were delivered the day after he died.<\/p>\n
His shoes are coming today,” Perales said. “The shoes I paid money for, he’s never gonna wear. But I’m gonna keep them.<\/p>\n
Despite his loss, Perales wants people to remember his sons for the lives they lived, not the way they died.<\/p>\n
“My boys were strong. They were fighters. I raised them right. They had good morals. They had good values,” he said.<\/p>\n
He said helping others was simply part of who they were.<\/p>\n
“We’d go feed the homeless. We’d help everybody. It didn’t matter who you were, what color you were. If you needed us, we were there.”<\/p>\n
When asked what he would say to the man accused of killing his sons, Perales paused before offering a brief response.<\/p>\n
“No comment,” he said. “The devil knows my intentions, but God knows my heart.”<\/p>\n
