{"id":399505,"date":"2026-08-06T18:54:08","date_gmt":"2026-08-06T18:54:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/399505\/"},"modified":"2026-08-06T18:54:08","modified_gmt":"2026-08-06T18:54:08","slug":"plano-isd-cte-center-on-track-to-open-in-october-plano","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/399505\/","title":{"rendered":"Plano ISD CTE Center on track to open in October | Plano"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Plano ISD\u2019s new <a href=\"https:\/\/ctecenter.pisd.edu\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Career and Technical Education Center<\/a> is on track to open this school year.<\/p>\n<p>The center was approved as part of PISD\u2019s 2022 bond and is expected to welcome students on Oct. 19, following the district\u2019s spring break, PISD CTE Director Karen Buechman said.<\/p>\n<p>The big picture<\/p>\n<p>The CTE center, located at the corner of Alma Drive and Park Boulevard currently has 1,040 students enrolled, but Principal Jean Laswell said they anticipate 1,200 students in the fall.<\/p>\n<p>The center will house 19 programs, broken up into the following nine pathways:<\/p>\n<p>Architecture and ConstructionArts, AV Technology and CommunicationsBusiness, Marketing and FinanceHospitality and TourismHealth ScienceHuman ServicesInformation TechnologyManufacturingTransportation, Distribution and Logistics<\/p>\n<p>Buechman said that certain programs have aspects open to the public, including a Credit Union of Texas bank, the TONI&amp;GUY hairdressing program and the Culinary Arts program\u2019s restaurant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a building that is going to provide opportunities for our kids, but also services for our community,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The specifics<\/p>\n<p>CTE classes will begin at Academy High School on Aug. 11 while the center finishes construction, Buechman said.<\/p>\n<p>Buechman added that staff will use fall break to move equipment into the building after construction is substantially completed.<\/p>\n<p>When open, Laswell said that most programs will require students to be at the CTE center for two class periods, with the exception of the TONI&amp;GUY, EMT and entrepreneurship programs, which will require more on-campus time.<\/p>\n<p>Transportation will be provided to students, but they can also drive themselves.<\/p>\n<p>By the numbers<\/p>\n<p>Buechman said that PISD\u2019s CTE enrollment has grown since the inception of the center. In the 2020-21 school year, the district\u2019s CTE enrollment was around 23,000, with 1,400 industry-based certifications awarded.<\/p>\n<p>Last school year, the district\u2019s CTE enrollment was around 27,000 students, and nearly 4,100 industry-based certifications were awarded.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Plano ISD\u2019s new Career and Technical Education Center is on track to open this school year.
