OXNARD, Calif. \u2014 In the last week the\u00a0NFC East has gotten a little spicy at the wide receiver position. The Washington Commanders signed Stefon Diggs<\/a>. And if you want to deeper, the Los Angeles Rams, a Cowboys\u2019 regular-season opponent on Dec. 20, held a tryout with defensive tackle Aaron Donald, who is nearly coming out of retirement.<\/p>\n Of course, if Donald officially signs by the end of the weekend, there\u2019s a chance he could get some snaps against the Cowboys in next Tuesday\u2019s scrimmage. But that\u2019s just asking for too much spice.<\/p>\n While the Cowboys stress that they\u2019ve made moves in the\u00a0offseason \u2014 the Rashan Gary trade, the\u00a0Jalen Thompson and Cobie Durant signings \u2014 it\u2019s hard not to notice what\u2019s occurred this week with their opponents\u2019 rosters.<\/p>\n Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n \u201cYeah, I think everybody’s in the same mode right now,\u201d coach Brian\u00a0Schottenheimer said. \u201cWe’re all looking at potential options to add to our roster. We’re certainly doing that. Ton of respect for both those players and I’m not surprised, but we’re actively looking as well.\u201d<\/p>\n If the Cowboys make any moves, it would depend on what they\u2019ve seen in training camp practices, next Tuesday\u2019s scrimmage and the preseason opener<\/a> at Seattle on August 15.<\/p>\n Last year, the Cowboys signed\u00a0Jadeveon Clowney\u00a014 days after trading Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.<\/p>\n The\u00a0Clowney signing was needed because of a weakness in the pass rush due to the Parsons trade. All Clowney did was lead the Cowboys in sacks with 8 \u00bd.<\/p>\n The Cowboys elected not to re-sign\u00a0Clowney despite his comfort in the 3-4 scheme. So\u00a0Clowney signed with the Houston Texans<\/a>, another opponent for the Cowboys on Oct. 4.<\/p>\n Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n Trading or signing players is a tricky business because of the compensation that\u2019s required in some cases. Trading for\u00a0Maxx Crosby was deemed too much in terms of compensation for the Cowboys, though team owner and general manager Jerry Jones said he hasn\u2019t closed the door on it<\/a>.<\/p>\n As of now, the Cowboys like what\u2019s on their 91-man roster and in plenty of ways they can\u2019t worry about what other teams have or don\u2019t have.<\/p>\n \u201cNot at all, to be honest, not really,\u201d right tackle Terence Steele said of paying attention to other team\u2019s moves. \u201cIf I’m scrolling on Twitter or something, I’ll see it. I don’t really give it too much thought, to be honest with you. I’m really just focused on what we got going on here, my job, my unit. So I don’t know. We’ll just see when that day comes.\u201d<\/p>\n A Tyler\u00a0Guyton clarification<\/p>\n Brian\u00a0Schottenheimer wanted to clarify some comments from earlier in the week that he named Tyler Guyton the starting left tackle<\/a>. Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n So is there no competition?<\/p>\n \u201cThere is when\u00a0Nate does the things he’s supposed to do to earn those [opportunities],\u201d Schottenheimer said. “Which he’s been great [Wednesday] in the mock and then so far [Thursday].\u201d<\/p>\n Schottenheimer also noted that left guard Tyler Smith is getting some snaps with the first-team at left tackle, during walkthroughs\u00a0that are conducted before practices.<\/p>\n \u201cHe’s doing well,\u201d\u00a0Schottenheimer said. \u201cI said that Nate Thomas needs to prepare and play a little bit better and more of a consistent starter capability to earn the right to get that chance to compete, to be a starting tackle.\u201d<\/p>\n Practice and injury updates<\/p>\n The defense had a strong practice with interceptions from\u00a0Caelan Carson and Justin Barron. Curtis Robinson almost had a one-handed interception as well. DaRon Bland had a pass breakup as well.<\/p>\n Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
