Gatsch said the aircraft he flew for the lesson was similar to what he flew in Vietnam, noting it had “a beefed up nose gear, but other than that it was pretty much the same.”(KLTV)A birthday gift decades in the making<\/p>\nLONGVIEW, Texas (KLTV) \u2014 Ted Gatsch, a Vietnam War veteran and former military pilot, returned to the cockpit for the first time in 54 years, completing what he called a final flight lesson as a 77th birthday gift from his wife.<\/p>\n
The Big Sandy resident flew Cessna Bird Dogs with the 74th Reconnaissance Airplane Company during the Vietnam War, spending two years in the air in his early twenties. His most recent flight log entry before this week was written when he was 22 years old.<\/p>\n

His wife, Darlene, arranged the flight after years of hearing him talk about his time in the air.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe\u2019s always talked about how much he liked flying in Vietnam and he missed it,\u201d Darlene said. \u201cHe\u2019s a great husband and a really nice man, so whatever he wants to do, I\u2019m all for it!\u201d<\/p>\n

Back in the air<\/p>\n
Once airborne, Gatsch said the experience felt familiar.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s like riding a bike,\u201d his flight instructor said. \u201cSome of that old memory came back and I could tell once he started getting more comfortable he just started flying. He was doing what he did. It\u2019s almost like he never left.\u201d<\/p>\n
Gatsch reflected on what the flight meant to him before takeoff.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a very sad day if a pilot\u2019s walking away from the aircraft not knowing it\u2019s his last flight or knowing that it is his last flight,\u201d Gatsch said. \u201cI just wanna do it one more time.\u201d<\/p>\n
After landing, he said he believed his younger self would approve.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think he would be proud that I went ahead and did it again,\u201d Gatsch said.<\/p>\n
Tracking down fellow veterans<\/p>\n
In addition to returning to the sky, Gatsch has spent the past several years tracking down members of his former unit. He has located four of the men so far.<\/p>\n
