Even casual moviegoers know it\u2019s never a good sign for a movie with a pedigree like \u201cMadden\u201d to largely avoid a theatrical release and go straight to streaming, especially when Amazon MGM Studios suggests it still wants the John Madden biopic to contend for Oscars because it stars two Oscar winners \u2014 Nicolas Cage and Christian Bale \u2014 and its director, David O. Russell, is a five-time Oscar-nominated filmmaker.<\/p>\n
In the film, Cage plays the legendary Oakland Raiders coach, sports commentator and video game entrepreneur, and Bale plays Raiders owner and general manager Al Davis. The announcement that \u201cMadden\u201d will debut on Amazon Prime on Nov. 18, instead of in theaters first, was met with disappointment and concern from both NFL and movie fans. The overall consensus on social media is that the movie must be bad, or that Amazon has otherwise lost confidence in it and doesn\u2019t want to spend the money on a nationwide theatrical release.<\/p>\n
This choice has left fans debating who or what is to blame if the movie is bad, or is not getting a big, splashy release. Could it be the \u201cstunt\u201d casting of the idiosyncratic Cage or the problematic history of Russell, the film\u2019s director and screenwriter?<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy would a movie of that magnitude, with that cast, be direct to streaming? This idea is bolstered by the fact that Amazon MGM Studios announced in April<\/a> that it had made a renewed commitment to bolster its theatrical slate in 2026. The studio\u2019s announcement followed the massive success of \u201cProject Hail Mary,\u201d which swiftly became one of the top-grossing films of 2026 after its release in March.<\/p>\n \u201cWhat you\u2019ll see reflects something very deliberate about the way we\u2019re building our theatrical slate,\u201d Courtenay Valenti, head of film for Amazon MGM Studios, said in April. \u201cWe\u2019re leaning into both beloved IP and bold, original ideas from filmmakers with distinctive voices.\u201d<\/p>\n Notably, the theatrical slate that Amazon announced in April did not include \u201cMadden,\u201d even though it falls into the category of a movie based on an original idea. It also comes from a filmmaker who has who won many accolades in the past for having a distinctive voice. Russell\u2019s slate of distinguished, distinctive and original films include\u00a0 \u201cI Heart Huckabees,\u201d \u201cThe Fighter,\u201d \u201cSilver Linings Playbook\u201d and \u201cAmerican Hustle.\u201d Two of those films starred Bale, who won a best supporting actor Oscar for \u201cThe Fighter\u201d and was nominated for best actor for \u201cAmerican Hustle.\u201d<\/p>\n Perhaps Amazon was trying to signal to fans that it had not lost all faith in \u201cMadden,\u201d by letting Variety know<\/a> that it would give it an \u201can awards-qualifying theatrical release earlier in November.\u201d On the other hand, Variety reported that the film still wouldn\u2019t get a wide release.<\/p>\n Elsewhere on X, one person said: \u201cI haven\u2019t heard great things (about \u2018Madden\u2019) but this is the final nail in the coffin for keeping it on my best picture potential board.\u201d Similarly, someone else said, \u201cYeah, this is confirmation that Amazon has no faith for Madden. Sending it straight to Prime Video \u2026\u00a0 is a death sentence.\u201d<\/p>\n On X and elsewhere, people\u2019s skepticism about \u201cMadden\u201d has been brewing for months, either centering on Cage or on Russell. On the idea of Cage playing Madden, people are divided. \u201cWorst casting choice ever looks and acts nothing like him,\u201d one person said, with another adding: \u201cNicolas Cage as John Madden feels like pure Hollywood stunt casting.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThe most unhinged, meme-ready actor in the business playing the loud, larger-than-life coach and broadcaster might deliver chaos, but it also risks turning a serious sports biopic into another Cage fever dream instead of something that actually honors the man\u2019s impact on football and the video game industry,\u201d that person continued.<\/p>\n On the other hand, Cage did win a best actor Oscar for playing a self-destructive alcoholic in \u201cLeaving Las Vegas\u201d in 1995. Even though that was 30 years ago, Cage can still can come across as a serious, dedicated actor who likes to immerse in his roles. \u201cNicolas Cage as John Madden is such wild casting but somehow I can already see it working,\u201d another person said.<\/p>\n Other people theorize that \u201cMadden\u2019s\u201d prospects have been hurt by its director. Russell was an A-List Hollywood filmmaker\u00a0 through \u201cAmerican Hustle\u201d in 2013. But after that his films have met with declining critical and commercial success. Indeed, his last big studio film, \u201cAmsterdam (2022)\u201d featuring Bale, Margot Robbie and others in a splashy, all-star cast, faced withering reviews and it was considered a box office bomb, losing its studio more than $100 million, as Deadline reported.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n Russell is no longer the hotshot director, which wouldn\u2019t bode well for \u201cMadden\u2019s\u201d theatrical prospects. \u201cIt\u2019s a David O. Russell movie in 2026, was it really going to be a movie people were going to see in theaters?\u201d one person said on Reddit.<\/a> Another added: \u201cHad throwaway written all over it after the disaster of \u2018Amsterdam.’\u201d<\/p>\n Meanwhile, Amazon might be wary about backing a major release from Russell, given that he\u2019s developed a reputation in Hollywood for being combative and allegedly abusive to actors and crew members in his films, including George Clooney, Lily Tomlin and Amy Adams.<\/p>\n Reports say that Clooney and Russell got into a physical confrontation on the set of the 1999 film \u201cThree Kings\u201d after Clooney accused the director of being demeaning to the crew. While the two men apologized to each other and filming continued, Clooney said as recently as 2024<\/a> that he would never work with Russell again and described the experience as \u201cthe worst\u201d in his life. Over the years, videos also leaked of Russell calling Tomlin sexist names during the production of \u201cI Heart Huckabees,\u201d and Adams confirmed in a 2016 interview that Russell was \u201chard\u201d on her and left her \u201cdevastated\u201d when they worked together on \u201cAmerican Hustle,\u201d as Salon reported.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n \u201cMadden\u201d also was not immune to Russell-related controversies, as fans have pointed out. TMZ reported last year<\/a> that a supporting actor had quit the production over the director allegedly using a racial epithet while they rehearsed a scene. The actor also objected to being a locker room scene that required full-frontal nudity, which allegedly angered Russell, TMZ reported. At the time, studio sources disputed TMZ\u2019s account, saying that Russell never used the slur, that \u201cnudity was not sprung on anyone\u201d and that an intimacy coordinator would be on set to make the actor feel more comfortable.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n \t\t\t
