AUSTIN\u00a0\u2013\u00a0Every\u00a0single\u00a0day for the past quarter century, a mother, father, son or daughter has died\u00a0in a crash\u00a0in Texas. \u00a0<\/p>\n

There are many wonderful things Texas is known for, but the\u00a025-year streak of daily deaths isone thing we need to change \u2013 and we can\u2019t do it alone.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Nov. 7, 2000, was the last deathless day\u00a0on Texas roads, and since then the state has lost more than\u00a091,000\u00a0people\u00a0in traffic crashes. None of us\u00a0wants\u00a0our great state to be known for this deadly streak. So, on this tragic anniversary, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is asking everyone to help #EndTheStreakTX of daily deaths.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s devastating thinking of all the families and communities that have lost loved ones\u00a0in the last25 years,\u201d TxDOT Executive Director Marc Williams said. \u201cIt\u2019s time to end this deadly streak, but it\u2019ll take all of us to do it. We can\u00a0engineer improvements. Law enforcement can patrol roads. And everyone needs to drive like a Texan: kind, courteous and safe,\u00a0to prevent crashes.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the Pharr region, fatal crashes have slightly decreased.<\/p>\n

Year to Date in 2025: 77 fatalities.\u00a0At this time in 2024: 87 fatalities.Locally we have seen increases in the following crashes:Speed relatedDriving Under The InfluenceCrashes Involving PedestriansMotorcycle Crashes<\/p>\n

Law enforcement partnership<\/p>\n

TxDOT\u00a0and\u00a0the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS)\u00a0are working together to share safe driving messages. During traffic stops for the next two weeks, DPS troopers will hand out a tip card listing safe driving behaviors that reflect the top causes of crashes.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThrough engineering and collaboration with law enforcement, we\u2019re working to improve safety,\u201d Texas Transportation Commission acting chair Alvin New said. \u201cEducation and innovation can help, but it\u2019s the everyday choices people make\u2014driving safely and buckling up\u2014that will truly end the streak.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Engineering safety\u00a0<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not just a saying \u2014 safety is truly TxDOT\u2019s top priority.\u00a0TxDOT currently has $60 billion worth of active construction projects across the state and every single one has a safety component.<\/p>\n

TxDOT is also using the latest technology to improve safety.\u00a0This includes\u00a0building\u00a0innovative intersections<\/a>,\u00a0implementing\u00a0new safe\u00a0design<\/a>\u00a0strategies\u00a0and\u00a0harnessing\u00a0artificial intelligence<\/a>\u00a0to prevent crashes.<\/p>\n

What you can do\u00a0<\/p>\n

Ending the streak\u00a0will require every single driver to consistently make safe decisions every time they get behind the wheel. \u00a0<\/p>\n

Most crashes can be prevented if drivers:\u00a0\u00a0\u2022\u00a0Drive safe speeds\u00a0\u2022\u00a0Buckle up\u00a0\u2022\u00a0Get a sober ride\u00a0\u2022\u00a0Avoid distractions\u00a0\u2022\u00a0Move over or slow down for vehicles with flashing lights on the side of the road\u00a0<\/p>\n

We all want to get to our destination safely. If everyone remembers who they are as Texans behind the wheel and drive kind, courteous and safe, then we\u00a0can\u00a0save lives. \u00a0<\/p>\n
