Produced by the Mexican American Museum of Texas in partnership with historian and author Dr. Tim Seiter, the exhibit explores how Tejanos and Spanish settlers experienced the Revolutionary era — and how their labor, resources and support campaigns reverberated far beyond Texas.

Organizers say the goal is to broaden public understanding of the Revolution as more than an East Coast fight. The exhibition covers Spanish Texas communities stretching from the Sabine to the Nueces Rivers — including San Antonio, La Bahía, Los Adaes and Nacogdoches — framing the war as a wider conflict shaped by diverse communities across the continent.

Executive Director Alison Bell said the exhibit builds directly on The Heritage Society’s recent America250 programming. “This exhibition is a natural continuum of our America250 work,” Bell said.

Spanish Texas During the American Revolution: Life and Legacy, 1775–1783 (The Heritage Society)

Bell said the museum’s summer presentation of The American Revolution Experience introduced visitors to communities that shaped the fight for independence — and the new display adds another layer to that story by spotlighting Spanish Texas and New Spain’s role in supporting the revolutionary cause.

“The American Revolution Experience introduced visitors to the many communities who shaped the fight for independence, and Spanish Texas During the American Revolution: Life and Legacy, 1775–1783 shows how the territories of New Spain helped sustain that effort 250 years ago,” Bell said. “It gives us a deeper, more accurate understanding of how global alliances — including the people of Spanish Texas — aided a soon‑to‑be‑freed America.”

The exhibit includes bilingual panels, replica objects, primary sources and descendant stories connecting historical figures to present-day families. One focus looks at support for Spanish military campaigns against the British, including the donativos — donations residents made to help Spanish Col. Bernardo de Gálvez. Organizers cite research showing Spanish Texans contributed nearly 1,700 pesos, an amount they equate to about 340 head of cattle.

That cattle economy also shows up in what Bell expects will be a crowd favorite: a life-sized bull displayed as a teaching tool about the cattle drives that supplied Spanish forces.

“We may have to gently remind children that it’s not a super-sized pinata or mechanical bull,” Bell said with a laugh. “It’s a teaching tool that shows how vital cattle were to the Revolution, but I can already tell it’s going to be a fan favorite.”

The Heritage Society is pairing the exhibition with public events and educational programming this fall.

The museum will host a Grand Opening Reception on Sept. 16, launching Hispanic Heritage Month and open to the public.

Beginning in September, the site will also offer a Lunch & Learn speaker series every third Thursday, featuring scholars discussing daily life in Spanish Texas — including foodways, medicine, courtship, leisure and frontier justice, along with the region’s relationships with Native nations.

To expand access, the museum will also hold free family days tied to major cultural celebrations, including after the Fiestas Patrias Parade on Saturday, Sept. 19, and during the Día de los Muertos parade and festival on Saturday, Nov. 7.
