HOUSTON (KTRK) — The man accused of causing injuries to a toddler so severe she remains critically hurt appeared in court for the first time on Saturday morning.<\/p>\n

Gerardo Gonzalez, 29, made his first appearance before a judge after being arrested and charged with causing serious bodily injury to a child on Friday.<\/p>\n

The investigation began after a couple arrived at a gas station on Cypresswood Drive in the Spring area and sought help from law enforcement for an unresponsive 2-year-old.<\/p>\n

Harris County Sheriff’s Office Deputies began life-saving measures until EMS arrived, according to the Precinct 4 Constable’s Office. The child was taken to a local hospital where staff determined the toddler had multiple life-threatening injuries.<\/p>\n

The child was eventually airlifted to another hospital, underwent surgery, and remains in critical condition, according to officials.<\/p>\n

The couple directed officials to a house on Rendezvous Court where the investigation determined the mother’s boyfriend allegedly struck the child multiple times, causing the injuries, according to court documents.<\/p>\n

Gonzalez allegedly admitted to beating the child, and the child is not expected to survive, according to court documents.<\/p>\n

The judge set Gonzalez’s bond at $1 million dollars and, if bond is met, set pre-trial conditions like house arrest and no contact with the victim’s family.<\/p>\n

The investigation into the incident is still ongoing.<\/p>\n
