{"id":40167,"date":"2025-11-07T22:00:08","date_gmt":"2025-11-07T22:00:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/40167\/"},"modified":"2025-11-07T22:00:08","modified_gmt":"2025-11-07T22:00:08","slug":"texas-ag-ken-paxton-sues-galveston-isd-over-refusal-to-display-ten-commandments","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/40167\/","title":{"rendered":"Texas AG Ken Paxton sues Galveston ISD over refusal to display Ten Commandments"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.click2houston.com\/topic\/Ken_Paxton\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.click2houston.com\/topic\/Ken_Paxton\/\">Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton <\/a>has filed a lawsuit against <a href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"\">Galveston Independent School District<\/a> after the district refused to display the Ten Commandments in classrooms, as required by a new state law.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The legal action follows a vote by the Galveston ISD board to not comply with Senate Bill 10, which mandates that public schools in Texas must display copies of the Ten Commandments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Paxton said the district\u2019s refusal violated state law and ignored the nation\u2019s moral and historical foundations. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cAmerica is a Christian nation, and it is imperative that we display the very values and timeless truths that have historically guided the success of our country,\u201d Paxton said in a news release announcing the suit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">He also argued there is \u201cno valid legal basis\u201d to prevent schools from displaying the Ten Commandments, noting that the concept of separation of church and state does not appear in the U.S. Constitution.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Earlier, Paxton\u2019s office issued a legal advisory to Texas school districts, emphasizing the state\u2019s commitment to fully enforce SB 10 and support districts that comply.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Galveston ISD released a statement in response to the lawsuit:<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The district is closed today and will evaluate the AG communication next week. We will closely monitor any possible litigation and consult with our legal counsel before making further decisions.
