EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14\/CBS4) \u2014 A federal jury in El Paso convicted a Mexican national on five charges tied to a migrant smuggling operation that authorities say moved hundreds of people across the U.S.-Mexico border and resulted in the death of a woman from heat exposure.<\/p>\n

Juan Carlos Lara-Quezada, also known as \u201cIronman,\u201d was found guilty of conspiracy to transport aliens resulting in death, conspiracy to harbor aliens, transporting aliens resulting in death, conspiracy to bring in aliens and conspiracy to launder monetary instruments, according to the U.S. Attorney\u2019s Office for the Western District of Texas.<\/p>\n

Federal prosecutors said Lara-Quezada was a leader of a smuggling organization that operated in West Texas and New Mexico. <\/p>\n

The organization smuggled hundreds of migrants into the United States through the desert near Santa Teresa, New Mexico, according to court documents and evidence presented at trial.<\/p>\n

After crossing the border, migrants were picked up and taken to a stash house in El Paso, where they stayed until arrangements were made to transport them farther into the country, prosecutors said.<\/p>\n

The case included the 2024 death of a woman who crossed the desert with her son-in-law.<\/p>\n

According to prosecutors, a foot guide led the pair on an eight-hour journey through the desert. The woman became ill during the trip, and smugglers were instructed to take her to an El Paso hospital rather than the stash house.<\/p>\n

Instead, prosecutors said, the guide and a driver abandoned the woman and her son-in-law on a sidewalk in a residential neighborhood while they were on the way to the hospital.<\/p>\n

A passing motorist saw the pair and called emergency services. The woman was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead. <\/p>\n

Her death was attributed to environmental heat exposure, according to the U.S. Attorney\u2019s Office.<\/p>\n

An investigation led by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement\u2019s Homeland Security Investigations resulted in Lara-Quezada\u2019s arrest on Dec. 20, 2024. He was charged in a second superseding indictment on April 2, 2025.<\/p>\n

Lara-Quezada is scheduled to be sentenced Nov. 2.<\/p>\n

Three co-defendants have already received federal prison sentences in connection with the case.<\/p>\n

Juan David Vaquera-Guerrero, also known as \u201cCone\u201d and \u201cSonic,\u201d was sentenced April 2 to 46 months in prison. Carlos Omar Lara-Muniz, also known as \u201cGoofy,\u201d received a 57-month sentence April 16. Ruben Esquivel-Gomez, also known as \u201cGuero,\u201d was sentenced April 21 to 72 months in prison.<\/p>\n

Federal prosecutors said all four defendants are Mexican nationals who were unlawfully present in the United States and were charged in connection with the migrant\u2019s death.<\/p>\n
