It’ll bring all of the county’s courts together in one place.

County Judge David Krebs said it is something that needed to happen.

“We had to do something to improve the judicial system,” Krebs said. “You know that old courthouse has roughly 50,000 square feet in it. Both admin and the judicial system was in there, and we’re moving the judicial system into a facility that’s going to have 92,000 square feet, so they’re going to have plenty more room.”

But putting a plan in place to get this building off the ground, according to Krebs, was a challenge.

“We originally planned on the building being somewhere around $50 million roughly. When we got through with COVID and all the increases that we had, it was pushed up to about 63 million,” Krebs said.

Krebs said construction on the state-of-the-art facility is now more than 65% complete.

We’ll have courtrooms on the 2nd and 3rd floor in the old building. We had one courtroom, the district courtroom. This one they’re going to have 2 district courtrooms, one on each floor, plus the court law judges will have their courtrooms on each floor with holding cells. We’re going to have holding cells in this facility where they can just bring the inmates over, put them in a holding cell until they’re through with the day activities, and then we can take them back to the jail.”>

Longtime Sinton resident Clemente Sanchez has seen the progress made on the new building and can’t wait for it to be opened to the community.

“It’s a nice building by what I’ve seen on the blueprints. So I’m glad they’re make building that building for it. The old courthouse, which is a nice, still a nice building, but it has to be upgraded quite a bit,” Sanchez said.

As for the century old courthouse, Krebs says it’s not going anywhere.

“That courthouse means a lot to the people of San Patricio County. Actually, that is our 3rd courthouse, I guess. The 1st 2 or 3 of them, I think, were destroyed over at Old San Patricia. That used to be where they were at. And that is actually the first courthouse that was built here when Sinton became the county seat. So, it’s got a lot of history in it,” Krebs said.

Sanchez is relieved that this building is just getting a renovation.

“I’m very glad that it’s gonna stay. I would hate for it to be demolished, torn down. So, I’m happy that it’s gonna stay,” Sanchez said.

Krebs said the justice center should be opened to the public by the end of May, or in early June.

Construction of San Patricio County’s new $63 million judicial building nears completion, consolidating all courts into a state-of-the-art…

[14
155,157,156
post-40404","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-corpus-christi","tag-corpus-christi","tag-corpus-christi-headlines","tag-corpus-christi-news
["GET
