{"id":404374,"date":"2026-08-12T08:56:12","date_gmt":"2026-08-12T08:56:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/404374\/"},"modified":"2026-08-12T08:56:12","modified_gmt":"2026-08-12T08:56:12","slug":"as-candida-auris-spreads-ut-health-san-antonio-scientist-highlights-growing-threat-of-antifungal-resistance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/404374\/","title":{"rendered":"As Candida auris spreads, UT Health San Antonio scientist highlights growing threat of antifungal resistance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Life-threatening fungus now reported in 27 states; Texas with second-most clinical cases<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">Contact: Steven Lee, (210) 450-3823, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.uthscsa.edu\/as-candida-auris-spreads-ut-health-san-antonio-scientist-highlights-growing-threat-of-antifungal-resistance\/mailto:lees22@uthscsa.edu\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lees22@uthscsa.edu<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">Content provided by Claire Kowalick<\/p>\n<p>SAN ANTONIO, Aug. 11, 2026 \u2013 As cases of the potentially deadly drug-resistant fungal infection Candida auris have spread to 27 states, including Texas with the second-highest number, a scientist at <a href=\"https:\/\/uthscsa.edu\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">UT Health San Antonio<\/a>, the academic health center of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.utsa.edu\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The University of Texas at San Antonio<\/a>, warns that the problem of strains resistant to front-line antifungal medications is becoming increasingly urgent globally.<\/p>\n<p>Nathan Wiederhold, PharmD, director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/lsom.uthscsa.edu\/pathology\/reference-labs\/fungus-testing-laboratory\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Fungus Testing Laboratory<\/a> and professor in the <a href=\"https:\/\/lsom.uthscsa.edu\/pathology\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/uthscsa.edu\/medicine\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine<\/a> at UT San Antonio, is a contributor to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41591-026-04334-5\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">commentary published in May in Nature Medicine<\/a> on the growing global concern of antifungal resistance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFungal infections are often overlooked because they are not as common as bacterial infections,\u201d Wiederhold said. \u201cBut they can be much more difficult to diagnose and treat, and we\u2019re seeing increasing spread and resistance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Growing global threat<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-31493 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/3d7991307010539172333753-wiederhold.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"233\" height=\"327\"\/>Nathan Wiederhold, PharmD<\/p>\n<p>For decades, scientists have studied antibiotic resistance, which is how bacteria evolve mechanisms to evade lifesaving drugs. Now, a similar challenge is emerging among fungi, where resistance to medications is making serious infections increasingly difficult to treat.<\/p>\n<p>Antifungal resistance occurs when fungal species develop the ability to survive treatments that once eliminated them. Along with clinical exposure to antifungal medications, scientists now recognize that environmental exposure can also add to resistance.<\/p>\n<p>Many fungi are plant pathogens, and agriculture relies heavily on fungicides to protect crops. Many agricultural fungicides are chemically similar to antifungal drugs used in clinical treatment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnvironmental exposure to these compounds can select for resistant organisms,\u201d Wiederhold said. \u201cThose resistant fungi can then enter human populations and lead to infections that are much more difficult to treat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Because fungal pathogens affect humans, animals and crops, Wiederhold describes antifungal resistance as a \u201cOne Health\u201d issue that requires collaboration across human, animal and plant sectors.<\/p>\n<p>Fungal threats drawing concern<\/p>\n<p>Among the growing number of resistant fungi, three pathogens are particularly concerning to scientists and clinicians.<\/p>\n<p>Candida auris is an emerging yeast that has spread rapidly across the globe. First recognized in the United States in 2016, with early cases concentrated on the East Coast, it since has expanded across more than half the country.<\/p>\n<p>As of Aug. 1, <a href=\"https:\/\/stacks.cdc.gov\/view\/cdc\/258655\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the number of clinical cases<\/a> reported nationwide stood at 3,544, with Texas second only to California with 437 cases, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But in a separate CDC listing, Texas led the nation with <a href=\"https:\/\/stacks.cdc.gov\/view\/cdc\/258656\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the number of screening cases<\/a> reported of individuals considered carriers, with 741.<\/p>\n<p>While the national clinical case numbers are down from last year, that gap is quickly narrowing, by 135 clinical cases in just one week\u2019s time, between July 25 and Aug. 1, the CDC numbers show. And screening cases in Texas are up from last year.<\/p>\n<p>Candida auris can cause life-threatening illness, according to the CDC, spreading easily in healthcare facilities and mostly affecting people who already are very sick. It can cause a range of infections from superficial skin infections to more severe bloodstream infections, and even produce sepsis, shock or organ failure.<\/p>\n<p>Patients who are infected as well as those who are \u201ccolonized\u201d as carriers often spread it onto surfaces and objects in healthcare settings, like bedrails, doorknobs and blood pressure cuffs, the CDC says. The fungus can survive on surfaces and objects for a long time and spread to other patients who then can become sick.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat makes Candida auris especially concerning is its resistance profile,\u201d Wiederhold said. \u201cMany strains are resistant to azoles, one of our major antifungal drug classes, and some are also resistant to amphotericin B, which is often considered a drug of last resort.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A second major concern is Aspergillus fumigatus, a mold commonly found in the environment. Unlike many fungi associated with crop diseases, A. fumigatus thrives in compost piles and decaying organic matter. Researchers believe exposure to residual agricultural fungicides in these environments has contributed to the development of resistance.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists first began observing resistant A. fumigatus infections in Europe approximately two decades ago. What surprised researchers was that many patients had never before received azole antifungal treatment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was one of the first major clues that resistance could develop through environmental exposure rather than just clinical exposure,\u201d Wiederhold said.<\/p>\n<p>The third emerging threat involves dermatophytes, fungi responsible for common infections such as ringworm and fungal nail disease. Historically, these infections have been localized and relatively easy to treat. However, beginning between 2016 to 2018, researchers in India reported outbreaks involving extensive skin lesions that covered large portions of patients\u2019 bodies and failed to respond to standard therapies.<\/p>\n<p>One dermatophyte species, Trichophyton indotineae, has since <a href=\"https:\/\/news.uthscsa.edu\/study-drug-resistance-on-rise-for-some-skin-infection-causing-fungi\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">spread internationally and is now being detected in North America<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Fungal challenges to South Texas<\/p>\n<p>South Texas faces several unique fungal disease concerns.<\/p>\n<p>One is coccidioidomycosis, commonly known as Valley fever, which is caused by Coccidioides fungi found in dry, arid regions of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. Although Valley fever has long been endemic in areas such as Arizona and California, researchers have seen its range expand in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re seeing evidence that it is moving northward and eastward,\u201d Wiederhold said. \u201cWe\u2019ve also identified isolates with azole resistance, which is concerning because clinicians need effective treatment options.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Candida auris also remains a growing concern in Texas, and healthcare systems continue monitoring for spread.<\/p>\n<p>Building a better response<\/p>\n<p>The Nature Medicine commentary suggests several key strategies for addressing antifungal resistance.<\/p>\n<p>Education and awareness: Clinicians, public health professionals, agricultural stakeholders and the public need greater awareness of fungal diseases and resistance trends. Improved understanding can lead to earlier diagnoses, more appropriate treatments and better prevention efforts.<\/p>\n<p>Stronger surveillance systems: Fungal resistance lacks a coordinated national surveillance program in the United States. Individual laboratories collect valuable data, but there is no national system for tracking resistance patterns.<\/p>\n<p>The Fungus Testing Laboratory at UT Health San Antonio receives fungal isolates from institutions across the United States and Canada. They monitor resistance trends and conduct susceptibility testing. Through funding from the Mycoses Study Group Education and Research Consortium and support from the CDC, the laboratory is currently helping track resistance in A. fumigatus and T. indotineae.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re in our third year of this work, but we\u2019re really just scratching the surface,\u201d Wiederhold said.<\/p>\n<p>Infection prevention and antimicrobial stewardship: Appropriate use of antifungal medications and agricultural fungicides can help slow the development of resistance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t want to use the strongest drugs or fungicides,\u201d Wiederhold said. \u201cEvery time we apply selective pressure, we create opportunities for resistance to emerge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Innovation and investment: Developing antifungal drugs is particularly challenging because fungi, like humans, are eukaryotic organisms. Their cellular similarities limit the number of safe drug targets available.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, only three major antifungal drug classes exist. Although promising new therapies are advancing through clinical development, researchers remain concerned that environmental resistance mechanisms could threaten even these next-generation treatments.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to new drugs, Wiederhold said improved diagnostics, expanded surveillance networks and research funding will be essential to halt the threat of antifungal resistance.<\/p>\n<p>What success looks like<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, success will be measured by improved patient outcomes and slower growth in resistance rates. Achieving these goals, Wiederhold said, requires progress across all five identified action areas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThink fungi. We need to recognize that antifungal resistance is an important and growing public health issue.
