Houston Mayor John Whitmire turned 77 years old on Thursday, more than a year before he plans to seek a second four-year term in office. <\/p>\n

When a Houston Public Media reporter wished Whitmire a happy birthday and asked how he felt about serving another four years on Wednesday, Whitmire said his administration is “actively working.”<\/p>\n

“I’m the first one here in the morning, last one to leave,” Whitmire said. “So I love where you\u2019re going, but we have started something special in the city of Houston. We\u2019re not going to finish it \u2018til the end of my second term. So I look forward to working with you \u2014 such a delight.”<\/p>\n

Antipathy toward older officeholders<\/p>\n

Former President Joe Biden entered office at 78 years old in 2020, making him the oldest president in history at the time. Concerns about his age factored heavily into his decision to drop his reelection bid in 2024, when he was 82. <\/p>\n

On Wednesday, city controller Chris Hollins \u2014 a consistent rival of Whitmire \u2014 wished the mayor a happy birthday. <\/p>\n

“Brother, you’re almost old enough to run for president now,” Hollins said. <\/p>\n

Biden’s performance as president and on the campaign trail contributed to a surge in negative sentiment about aging officeholders, said Brandon Rottinghaus, political science professor at the University of Houston \u2014 but it also highlighted the importance of voter perception. <\/p>\n

A Pew Research Center survey<\/a> found 79% of Americans supported maximum age limits for federal elected officials in 2023. But a poll by Gallup<\/a> in 2024 found 59% of Americans were “very concerned” about Biden’s age, compared to just 18% for President Donald Trump, who was three years younger. <\/p>\n

“Pivot to Whitmire, he is spry,” Rottinghaus said. “He has energy, and you can see it. It doesn\u2019t appear as though he has any real serious ramifications for his age \u2014 where it might be different for someone who\u2019s similarly old, but who is functioning in a slightly different way. Perception really matters.”<\/p>\n

Whitmire, born in 1949, is a member of the Baby Boomer generation \u2014 a cohort living longer than any previous generation, according to researchers<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Life expectancy in the U.S. was 79 as of 2024<\/a>, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), compared to 68 in 1949<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Discourse about older officeholders has intensified because “Boomers, who were such an active generation, are aging and living longer,” said UH political science lecturer Nancy Sims.<\/p>\n

But, Sims added, “I don\u2019t think people think of John Whitmire as older. Maybe more experienced, but he\u2019s such a vigorous and engaged mayor, you don\u2019t really see people talking about his age very much.”<\/p>\n

Whitmire plans to seek a second mayoral term after serving 50 years in the Texas Legislature and nearly three years at City Hall. <\/p>\n

Age weighs heavy over Houston congressional race<\/p>\n

In Houston, voters in the 18th Congressional District lost representation after the deaths of two of Whitmire’s longtime Democratic allies and fellow officeholders.<\/p>\n

U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, who ran against Whitmire<\/a> for mayor in 2023, died in 2024 at the age of 74<\/a> after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Her successor, former Mayor Sylvester Turner, died in 2025<\/a> at the age of 70 after battling bone cancer. <\/p>\n

In the Democratic primary runoff for the 18th District in February, former Harris County Attorney Christian Menefee, 37 at the time, bested 78-year-old Al Green<\/a> \u2014 who has long served as the Congressman for the 9th Congressional District, which was recently redrawn. <\/p>\n

The age difference “was an issue in the Congressional District 18 primary,” said Rice University political scientist Mark Jones. “When we go to Mayor Whitmire, I think one thing that stands out is that he definitely appears to have won the genetic lottery \u2014 in the sense that while he is 77, in terms of vitality and even how he looks, he appears to be someone who\u2019s operating more in the 60s.”<\/p>\n

As the next round of municipal elections approaches in November 2027, “Mayor Whitmire\u2019s opponents certainly will seize on the issue of age as one potential attack angle against the mayor to see if it sticks,” Jones said, “but as long as the mayor continues with a very active schedule and doesn\u2019t exhibit any signs of mental decline \u2014 which hasn\u2019t been the case thus far \u2014 those attacks will probably fall pretty short.”<\/p>\n

The Houston Chronicle<\/a> reported Whitmire was the oldest person elected to the city’s mayoral office in at least 100 years. <\/p>\n
