EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14\/CBS4) \u2014 A Cuban man with a criminal record was arrested this week trying to cross from Ciudad Juarez and into El Paso using a fake birth certificate and ID. <\/p>\n
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Western District of Texas, Erick Maniel Martinez-Mendez tried to cross from Mexico and into the U.S. through the Paso Del Norte border bridge in Downtown El Paso, showing authorities a Texas birth certificate and ID with the name and date of birth that weren’t his. <\/p>\n
RECOMMENDED: <\/a>Mexico man arrested in El Paso border crossing linked to alleged child smuggling case<\/a><\/p>\n According to the criminal complaint affidavit, Martinez-Mendez reportedly told Customs and Border Protection officers that he lived in El Paso and was in Mexico visiting his mother in the hospital. <\/p>\n However, authorities said that a fingerprint scan revealed Martinez-Mendez’s real identity and his criminal record, which includes convictions for robbery\/home invasion\/armed kidnapping, for which he was sentenced to 17 years in prison; third degree grand theft and dealing in stolen property, for which he was sentenced to five years in prison; aggravated battery of a person detained in prison, which earned him a six-year prison sentence; and, most recently, smuggling contraband into prison and resisting an officer\/battery on law enforcement, for which he was sentenced to four years and eight month.<\/p>\n RECOMMENDED: New sexual contact charges against Las Cruces teacher after 2nd victim comes forward<\/a><\/p>\n
