EL PASO, Texas (KTSM<\/a>) \u2014 The United Way of El Paso County (UWEPC) has established the Government Shutdown Relief Fund to support those affected by the delay and\/or reduced SNAP benefits, or those furloughed due to the shutdown, United Way announced in a news release.<\/p>\n

According to the news release, the initial goal is to raise $25,000 that will be matched 2-to-1\u00a0by\u00a0the\u00a0Paso\u00a0del Norte Health Foundation and the\u00a0UWEPC, maximizing impact. These can be submitted\u00a0here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe continued mission\u00a0of\u00a0United\u00a0Way\u00a0of\u00a0El\u00a0Paso\u00a0County\u00a0is\u00a0to\u00a0respond\u00a0to\u00a0the community\u2019s needs in real-time, providing\u00a0support\u00a0through the Center for Resiliency, which exists\u00a0to\u00a0stabilize households and foster community healing\u00a0by\u00a0addressing the intertwined challenges\u00a0of\u00a0housing, insecurity, and trauma and leveraging external partners, such as the\u00a0El\u00a0Paso\u00a0Community Foundation,\u00a0Paso\u00a0del Norte Health Foundation and Project Bravo,\u201d read the news release.<\/p>\n

In addition to collecting donations through the relief fund, UWEPC is working with local food distribution organizations\u00a0to\u00a0create volunteer opportunities\u00a0for\u00a0those\u00a0looking\u00a0to\u00a0donate their time. Upcoming opportunities include the following:<\/p>\n

Kelly Center for Hunger Relief:\u00a0Volunteer activities may include food distribution, planting or harvesting at Jardin de Milagros, assisting in the Clothes Closet.\u00a0Those\u00a0interested may email\u00a0Volunteer@KellyFresh.org<\/a>\u00a0or call (915) 261-7499.<\/p>\n

El\u00a0Pasoans Fighting Hunger Food Bank:\u00a0Volunteer activities may include food distribution, packaging, or preparation. Walk-ins are welcome, or you can register here<\/a>.<\/p>\n
