Regents to Vote on Ashley Robinson, Corey Lowery"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"inline-text-1\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-blue my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"65\">HOUSTON &#8212; Texas Southern University&#8217;s Board of Regents will decide Wednesday whether to approve Ashley Robinson as vice president and director of athletics and Corey Lowery as head men&#8217;s basketball coach, two of the most consequential hires in the athletic department.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-2\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-blue my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"68\">But one of President James W. Crawford III&#8217;s recommendations reaches the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/college\/hbcu\/basketball\/texas-southern-board-back-robinson-split-lowery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">full board without the support<\/a> of either committee that considered him.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-3\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-blue my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6b\">According to sources familiar with the proceedings, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss personnel matters, the Personnel and Litigation Committee and Athletics Committee unanimously recommended Ashley Robinson for vice president and director of athletics.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-4\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-blue my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6e\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/college\/hbcu\/basketball\/texas-southern-expected-hire-corey-lowery-head-coach\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Corey Lowery<\/a>, Crawford&#8217;s recommendation for head men&#8217;s basketball coach, received a dramatically different response.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-5\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-blue my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6h\">Neither committee recommended Lowery.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-6\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-blue my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6k\">Yet Lowery&#8217;s candidacy remains alive and will advance to the full Board of Regents during its special session Wednesday, Aug. 19.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-7\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-blue my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6n\">That raises a significant question: \u00a0Who&#8217;s in control at TSU?<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/01m05qa93rrghec1f55j.jpg\" alt=\"Who's in control at TSU?\" title=\"Who's in control at TSU?\" width=\"0\" class=\"undefined w-full w-full blur-[5px]\" q:id=\"6x\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Who&#8217;s in control at TSU? | HBCU Legends<\/p>\n<p>THE HIRING PROCESS AND QUESTIONS<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-10\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-blue my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"74\">Crawford recommends the candidates, but the president does not have a vote on the Board of Regents. The committees met to review the recommendations, working in an advisory capacity. The eight voting regents ultimately decide whether Robinson and Lowery will be hired on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-11\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-blue my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"77\">With Lowery advancing despite failing to receive a favorable recommendation from either committee, attention now turns to Board Chairman James M. Benham and his role in the process.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-12\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-blue my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7a\">One alumnus put the question more directly to HBCU Legends: \u201cWho&#8217;s James M. Benham, and is he in control, making all of the decisions?\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-13\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-blue my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7d\">Other alums and observers have raised similar questions: Is Texas Southern identifying the best candidates? How is the university funding <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/college\/hbcu\/basketball\/texas-southern-athletic-director-coach-search-update\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">two national searches<\/a>? Does Crawford have the best interests of Texas Southern athletics in mind?<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-14\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-blue my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7g\">And one question continues to surface around the basketball search:<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-15\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-blue my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7j\">Who is Corey Lowery, and why is his candidacy still moving forward?<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-16\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-blue my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7m\">Everything points back to April 2025, when a series of events began reshaping the Texas Southern athletics department.<\/p>\n<p>HOW TEXAS SOUTHERN REACHED THE AUG. 19 VOTE<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-19\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-blue my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7w\">Two of Texas Southern&#8217;s highest-profile athletics positions became vacant within a single academic year.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-20\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-blue my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7z\">One followed allegations against an athletics director, a civil lawsuit, administrative investigations and an eventual termination.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-21\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-blue my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"82\">The other came when the men&#8217;s basketball coach resigned on the opening day of the transfer portal.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-22\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-blue my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"85\">Here is how Texas Southern reached Wednesday&#8217;s special session.<\/p>\n<p>THE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR VACANCY<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-24\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-blue my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"8b\">Late April 2025 &#8212; A Texas Southern athletics department staff member alleged that then-vice president of intercollegiate athletics Dr. Kevin Granger made inappropriate comments, engaged in unwelcome physical contact and committed a groping incident.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-25\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-blue my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"8e\">The allegations became public weeks later in a civil court filing.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-26\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-blue my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"8h\">June 2, 2025 &#8212; Houston attorney Tony Buzbee filed a civil lawsuit in Harris County on behalf of the staff member, who remained employed by the university.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-27\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-blue my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"8k\">The petition sought more than $1 million in damages, penalties, costs and attorney&#8217;s fees. Granger denied the allegations through his attorney.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-28\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-blue my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"8n\">June 2025 &#8212; Texas Southern placed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/college\/hbcu\/texas-southern-university\/texas-southern-dr-kevin-granger-s-attorney-responds-sexual-assault-lawsuit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Granger on administrative leave<\/a>. The university opened two external, independent administrative inquiries under Title VII and Title IX.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-29\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-blue my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"8q\">August 2025 &#8212; Crawford appointed Dr. Paula L. Jackson interim athletics director, shifting day-to-day operations to Jackson while Granger&#8217;s status remained unresolved.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-30\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-blue my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"8t\">February 13, 2026 &#8212; Texas Southern terminated Granger as vice president of intercollegiate athletics. He had led the department since February 2019.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-31\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-blue my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"8w\">The university kept his Hall of Fame status and student-athlete records intact.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-32\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-blue my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"8z\">Mar. 5, 2026 &#8212; HBCU Legends first reported that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/college\/hbcu\/basketball\/texas-southern-removes-kevin-granger-s-banner\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Granger&#8217;s retired No. 10 jersey banner<\/a> was no longer hanging in the rafters at H&amp;PE Arena and photographed the vacant space during the Prairie View A&amp;M-Texas Southern basketball doubleheader.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-33\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-blue my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"92\">A high-ranking athletics department administrator looked toward the rafters and told HBCU Legends, \u201cI had no idea it was removed, and I&#8217;m here every day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-34\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-blue my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"95\">Texas Southern has not publicly explained the removal or connected it to the lawsuit.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-35\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-blue my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"98\">March 12, 2026 &#8212; Granger&#8217;s termination became public. HBCU Legends reported the firing, citing reporting by Terrance Harris of The Defender. The civil case remained active.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-36\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-blue my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"9b\">The allegations against Granger are drawn from civil court filings and public statements. The case is civil, not criminal. Granger has denied the allegations through his attorney and has not been charged with a crime. Crawford III (middle), and Ashley Robinson (right) | Courtesy of the Houston Defender<\/p>\n<p>ROBINSON GETS UNANIMOUS COMMITTEE SUPPORT, NOT LOWERY<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-57\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-blue my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"bq\">According to sources familiar with the Aug. 14 proceedings, the Personnel and Litigation Committee and Athletics Committee <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/college\/hbcu\/basketball\/texas-southern-board-back-robinson-split-lowery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">unanimously recommended Robinson<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-58\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-blue my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"bt\">Lowery did not receive a favorable recommendation from either committee.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-59\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-blue my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"bw\">That distinction is significant.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-60\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-blue my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"bz\">According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/tsu.edu\/about\/board-of-regents\/pdf\/TSU%20By-Laws-4-1-2026.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">board&#8217;s bylaws<\/a>, as amended April 1, 2026, Texas Southern maintains seven standing committees whose members serve two-year terms and are appointed by the board chairman. The Personnel and Litigation Committee oversees hiring and compensation policies, employee complaints, and litigation. The Athletics Committee oversees program quality, participation opportunities, conference and NCAA compliance and the athletics budget.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-61\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-blue my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"c2\">Neither committee makes the final hiring decision. They can recommend candidates, but the authority to approve a hire rests with the full board.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-62\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-blue my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"c5\">Despite the committees\u2019 opposition, Lowery remains Crawford&#8217;s recommended candidate and will be considered by the full Board of Regents on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-63\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-blue my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"c8\">Crawford cannot provide Lowery with a vote.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-64\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-blue my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"cb\">The president recommends candidates to the Board of Regents but is not one of the eight voting regents who will decide whether the appointments are approved.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-65\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-blue my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"ce\">That shifts attention from the president&#8217;s recommendation to the board members who have the authority to turn that recommendation into a hire.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-66\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-blue my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"ch\">And it raises another question:<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-67\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-blue my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"ck\">Who is carrying Lowery&#8217;s candidacy forward?<\/p>\n<p>WHAT ROLE DOES BENHAM PLAY IN LOWERY&#8217;S CANDIDACY?<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-69\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-blue my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"cq\">James M. It may be Lowery.<\/p>\n<p>WHAT HAPPENS AUG. 19?<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-120\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-blue my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"hf\">Texas Southern&#8217;s Board of Regents will convene Wednesday in a special hybrid session with final authority to approve or reject Crawford&#8217;s recommendations.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-121\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-blue my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"hi\">Eight regents have voting authority.
