RUSH COUNTY, Ind. (WKRC) \u2014 A 2-year-old girl is fighting for her life after her family found her drowning in their home’s basement amid historic flooding in parts of Indiana following severe storms last Tuesday, per PEOPLE<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Crews were called to a home in Rush County, about an hour and a half northwest of Cincinnati, Wednesday evening after the girl, later identified as Alayna, was found. On the way to the residence, emergency crews encountered impassable roads in several locations and discovered the family’s home “was surrounded by deep water” when they arrived, according to the Rush County Sheriff’s Department<\/a>. <\/p>\n

According to the department, a nearby farmer with a tractor helped personnel reach the home and then helped transport the toddler and her family to safety. The girl then had to be airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital for further treatment. <\/p>\n

“Our thoughts are with the child and the family. We also appreciate the quick response from emergency personnel and the local farmer who helped reach the residence during the flooding,” the sheriff’s department shared in a press release. <\/p>\n

The sheriff’s department investigated and determined the drowning was accidental. According to a GoFundMe<\/a> set up by Alayna’s aunt, Poshia Slusher, the toddler had been home with her mother and 13-year-old brother when their home began to flood. That’s when Alayna was found in the basement.<\/p>\n

Slusher says the 13-year-old called 911 while Alayna’s mother performed CPR. While Alayna was placed on a ventilator in a pediatric ICU, the fundraiser’s co-organizer, Kaetlin Bowling, posted an update on the GoFundMe Sunday, saying Alayna has started breathing without the help of a ventilator. <\/p>\n

“There is still a long road ahead for our sweet girl, and we know we aren’t out of the woods yet.
