While still waiting for the Fort Worth City Council to approve the settlement on Aug. 25, the family expressed relief after the latest development in their case. Atatiana’s sister, Ashley Carr, said the family is glad to know they have finally received accountability.

“This case represents a rare instance in which a family has received accountability both criminally and civilly following the killing of their loved one by a police officer,” Carr said in a statement, per FOX 4 News. “While we are grateful that Atatiana’s case resulted in both criminal and civil accountability, neither a conviction nor a financial settlement can restore what was taken from our family. Nothing can bring Atatiana home.”

Councilman Chris Nettles praised the community for staying persistent to bring justice for Atatiana.

“We didn’t give up on the option to make sure the family can come to some type of resolution,” he said. “We have, I have and this council have worked to make sure that her legacy will live on in Fort Worth.”

Atatiana was shot by officer Aaron Dean while babysitting her 8-year-old nephew Zion Carr. Dean arrived at the house after Atatiana’s neighbor called police for a welfare check, WFAA reported. The officer was captured on video as he stood outside the front door of the home, walked around the side of the house and opened a gate to the backyard. He then shot through a window in the backyard and struck Jefferson. In Dec. 2022, Dean was found guilty of manslaughter. He was sentenced to 11 years, 10 months and 12 days in prison.

According to the agreement, Jefferson’s two nephews, who are both minors, will receive a share of the settlement, which will be placed in a trust until they are 18 years old. Jefferson’s surviving family will also get additional shares of the settlement.

The city of Fort Worth, Texas, has agreed to an $11.25 million settlement with the family of Atatiana…

[10
116,118,117
post-408991","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-fort-worth","tag-fort-worth","tag-fort-worth-headlines","tag-fort-worth-news
["GET
