While much of Texas remains under heat advisories<\/a> halfway through August, many Texans may be wondering when temperatures will finally begin to cool down.<\/p>\n

Most of Texas is still experiencing stretches of triple-digit heat, but the National Weather Service says some of the hottest temperatures of the year will happen this week \u2014 and it will only get cooler from here.<\/p>\n

Average temperatures across much of the state typically peak in early to mid-August before beginning a gradual downward trend through the remainder of the year, according to the National Weather Service. That doesn’t mean the triple-digit days are necessarily over, however.<\/p>\n

Most of Texas is still experiencing stretches of triple-digit heat, but the National Weather Service says some of the hottest temperatures of the year will happen this week \u2014 and it will only get cooler from here.<\/p>\n

In Dallas-Fort Worth and Waco, the average final 100-degree day typically arrives in late August. Historically, both locations have recorded 100-degree temperatures as late as October.<\/p>\n

Here’s what to know about when temperatures will finally cool down.<\/p>\n

When will it cool down in Texas?<\/p>\n

Texas is set to experience above normal temperatures through at least October, especially in the western part of the state, according to the National Weather Service. West Texas is also expected to have higher chances of precipitation through fall.<\/p>\n

Temperatures should begin to fall to near normal or normal for much of the southwest by November.<\/p>\n

The Old Farmer’s Almanac<\/a> predicts a warmer-than-average September, followed by a slightly cooler October. Rainfall is expected to remain below average throughout the fall.<\/p>\n

El Ni\u00f1o winter 2026<\/p>\n

El Ni\u00f1o<\/a> is strengthening, with a greater than 90% chance of a very strong event during the Northern Hemisphere fall and winter 2026-27, the National Weather Service said on Aug. 13.<\/a><\/p>\n

El Ni\u00f1o can have a major impact on winter weather patterns. Scientists can’t say definitively at this point exactly which regions of the United States might be influenced by El Nin\u0303o, however Texas is predicted to be wetter than normal and stormy due to El Ni\u00f1o, according to the Almanac.<\/p>\n

That change can influence where rain, snow and colder air travel across North America.<\/p>\n

When that colder air meets abundant moisture, some storms could produce sleet, freezing rain, or heavy, wet snow.<\/p>\n
