But you can in Dallas.

Velocity, Sim Racing Lounge officially opened July 25 at The Hill, Dallas, bringing its combination of professional-grade racing simulators, food, cocktails and group entertainment to 9830 N. Central Expressway. The more than 10,000-square-foot venue has 32 simulators, a full kitchen and bar, private event space and room for up to 400 guests.

Local Profile stopped by to see what the experience is actually like.

Come For The Racing, Stay For Dinner

The simulators are clearly the stars, but Velocity doesn’t feel like a gaming center with a few snacks tacked onto the side.

There’s a full restaurant and bar in the middle of the action, along with a giant video wall where guests can watch races and follow what’s happening on the track. That makes it easy for a group to split up for a bit. One person can race while another grabs a drink, watches from the lounge or orders dinner.

And I’d recommend arriving hungry.

We started with food and drinks before getting behind the wheel, and the menu is substantial enough to make Velocity work as a dinner stop even if racing isn’t your main priority. The menu includes shareable appetizers, sandwiches, entrees and desserts.

We started with the crispy avocado tacos, where thick slices of avocado get a crunchy panko coating and are tucked into flour tortillas with queso, pico, radish, cilantro-lime crema and herbed goat cheese. They hit that sweet spot between crispy, creamy and fresh without feeling overly heavy.

Photo: Matilda Preisendorf | Local Profile

The Angus flatiron and frites was the heartier choice: an 8-ounce house-marinated steak topped with roasted garlic herb butter and chimichurri, alongside thin-cut Parmesan fries with mustard seed ketchup. The steak brings plenty of savory flavor, while the chimichurri gives it a bright, herby finish.

The cocktail menu keeps the racing theme going with names that sound ready for the starting grid. The Purple Sector combines Bacardi with blackberry, mint, lime and egg white for a fruity, refreshing sip with a silky finish. The Momo Drift takes a more playful turn with vodka, lemon, vanilla, orange and peach Red Bull, while the Ichigo Daiquiri mixes Japanese rum with strawberry and lime for a bright, tart take on the classic. The Monaco Blush is the lightest of the bunch, pairing Tito’s vodka with pink grapefruit, rosemary and lime for a crisp, citrusy cocktail.

You Don’t Need To Be A Racing Pro

This was probably the biggest surprise for me: You don’t need to know much about racing to have fun here.

Velocity’s Pit Crew staff helps guests choose a car and track based on their experience level and what kind of challenge they want. The selection covers multiple racing series and classes, from GT3 to IndyCar, while the track library includes famous circuits such as Monza, Red Bull Ring, Barcelona GP, Suzuka and Nürburgring Nordschleife. The company says more than 100 tracks are available.

Photo: Matilda Preisendorf | Local Profile

A standard Quick Race lasts about 25 minutes and can be done solo or with friends. A Double Race stretches the experience to about 55 minutes and includes two cars and two tracks. There’s also a monthly Leaderboard Challenge for anyone who wants a little more competition.

For groups, headsets allow drivers to communicate while racing. If you’re by yourself, you can race against AI or try to put your name on the leaderboard.

Yes, Kids Can Race, Too

Despite the serious-looking equipment, Velocity isn’t an adults-only racing playground.

There were plenty of families visiting during our stop, including a birthday party. There is no minimum age to race, although drivers should be at least 5 feet tall to comfortably reach the pedals and controls. Children under 17 need a parent or guardian to sign a waiver.

That makes the venue an option for more than a night out with friends. Birthday parties, corporate events, celebrations and other group gatherings are part of the concept, with the Dallas location able to accommodate groups ranging from smaller parties to a full 400-person buyout.

What To Know Before You Go

The Dallas location is at The Hill, and walk-ins are welcome, although Velocity recommends booking online to secure a simulator. The Quick Race starts at $29, while the Double Race starts at $49.

Photo: Matilda Preisendorf | Local Profile

I’d also give yourself some time before the scheduled race if you plan to eat. Velocity recommends arriving about an hour ahead of a booking if you want food or drinks beforehand.

The biggest takeaway from our visit? Velocity makes more sense when you think of it as a night out rather than simply a place to drive a virtual race car. You can come for the competition, dinner, drinks, a birthday party or just to watch the action. And if you happen to leave with a new personal-best lap time, even better.

We thank Velocity, Sim Racing Lounge for hosting and treating us.
