SafeSport is authorized by Congress to review and respond to reports of sexual misconduct in Olympic and\u00a0Paralympic sports.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>The nonprofit declared Garcia &#8220;permanently ineligible&#8221; because of criminal charges for sexual misconduct involving minors, SafeSport records indicate.<\/p>\n<p>In November, two Bexar County grand juries indicted Garcia on nine counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child, six counts of sexual abuse of a child and one count of indecency with a child through sexual contact.<\/p>\n<p>He was arrested Nov. 13 and released from the Bexar County jail after posting a $200,000 bond. He ended up behind bars again on\u00a0Dec. 5, when he was arrested on a misdemeanor family violence charge of indecent assault.<\/p>\n<p>An affidavit supporting Garcia&#8217;s December arrest says the grand jury indictments stem from his alleged sexual abuse years earlier of at least one youth athlete at his boxing gym.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>According to the affidavit, a 31-year-old woman contacted police in 2025 and reported that Garcia\u00a0sexually assaulted her on Feb. 25 of that year and had also abused her when she was 12 or 13 and he was her boxing coach. She had remained in contact with Garcia, his family and the San Antonio boxing community into adulthood.<\/p>\n<p>Describing the alleged February 2025 assault, the woman told police she watched a boxing match with Garcia and her friends and went to Garcia&#8217;s home in North-Central San Antonio afterward. She and Garcia sat at a table and began talking. During the conversation, Garcia allegedly pulled the woman toward him and began touching her breast. She asked him to stop and he did not.<\/p>\n<p>The woman told Garcia that &#8220;his sexual abuse ruined her life,&#8221; the arrest affidavit says.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re cool,&#8221; Garcia responded, according to the woman.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>The affidavit states that Garcia was previously indicted on criminal charges related to his alleged sexual abuse of the same woman when she was a child.<\/p>\n<p>Garcia was released from jail on the indecent assault charge on Dec. 6 after posting a $10,000 bond. He is awaiting trial on that charge and the\u00a0child sexual abuse charges, according to court records.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Records do not reveal where Garcia coached when the alleged abuse happened.<\/p>\n<p>Sunset Boxing on\u00a0the East Side\u00a0featured him <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DGuGQOFx7bv\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in an Instagram post<\/a> in March 2025.\u00a0A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expressnews.com\/sports\/other-sports\/boxing\/article\/Boxing-and-San-Antonio-A-glove-affair-11107786.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2017 article in the San Antonio Express-News<\/a> says Garcia was a promoter for boxing matches staged at Last Chance Ministries, a church and community service organization on the West Side.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>Garcia was a material examiner and forklift driver with the Defense Logistics Agency, an arm of the Defense Department, and worked\u00a0for the federal government for 28 years, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dla.mil\/About-DLA\/News\/News-Article-View\/Article\/4059836\/employee-spotlight-jose-garcia\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">an interview posted on the agency&#8217;s website<\/a> on Feb. 7, 2025.<\/p>\n<p>In the interview, Garcia said he grew up boxing and coached five days a week when he wasn&#8217;t working his day job.
