Term limits for our elected officials leave the bureaucrats in charge. Remember the $600 toilets seats. Bureaucrats are not accountable to the public. Elected officials are and can be voted out.

Article continues below this ad

Norma Minnis, East Dallas

How about a citizen referendum?

In 1984, I was marketing and promotions manager at The Dallas Times Herald. As a result, when the Republican Convention came to town that year, I had a front row seat to observe the event.

Out-of-state delegates were awed by the cranes dotting our city’s skyline, the obvious signs of wealth and success from leading financial, health care, technology and oil and gas industries. They felt Dallas really was that “Big D” reflected in the immensely popular primetime soap opera television show called Dallas.

At that time, our city was blessed with outstanding leaders in business, government and civic organizations.

Article continues below this ad

Today, as I gaze south from booming Collin County, I see a rudderless city lacking leadership. It features a divided city council that is unable to arrive at a consensus for the most important votes, an AWOL mayor and an often overwhelmed city manager.

I’m not sure if a citizen referendum could change the current form of government in Dallas, but it is a topic that I believe should be discussed.

Thomas G. Price, McKinney

They will leave in droves

As a native Dallasite, my ambition was to be a Dallas police officer. I achieved that goal and did so for over 40 years, retiring recently.

Article continues below this ad

All you need to do is watch what the leadership of our city does and ignore what they say. For years, they have promised public safety is their number one priority, but the facts show otherwise.

Citizens resoundingly passed Proposition U, and city leadership has chosen to ignore it. City leadership has denigrated/attacked the police and fire pension, denying its legal responsibility, and further intentionally damaging it by reducing manpower, who pay into the pension. This also negatively affects public safety.

The pension was the city’s main tool to attract/retain quality public service personnel. They have severely damaged their ability to attract or retain public service staff.

And now they prepare to remove the last thing keeping personnel here. Removing significant health care options for city employees, almost universally provided by most jurisdictions.

This will throw open the exit doors for both police and fire personnel who will have no reason to remain. They will leave in droves for higher paying positions with stable pensions and industry standard pay and benefits.

Article continues below this ad

God is weeping

Re: “Plans for Islamic wash stations dropped,” Sunday Metro story.

The backlash in our state against Muslims and Hindus exercising their freedom of religion is disappointing.

Muslims building or expanding a mosque is not Sharia, nor does it infringe on your rights. Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport building ablution stations financed with private dollars also is not infringing on your rights.

Article continues below this ad

You know what does infringe on people’s rights, and what is a blatant violation of the Constitution? Forcing classrooms to display the Ten Commandments or requiring the Bible be taught in public schools. And the biggest one, Gov. Greg Abbott wielding his power to stop non-Christians from worshiping as they please.

You see it time and time again — Christians are all for freedom of religion unless it’s anything non-Christian — meaning Christians have a right to worship as they please but you do not.

If there is a God, they are weeping at what this state and this country have become.

We’re next

Re: “Some history about vaccines,” by Golder Wilson, Monday Letters

Article continues below this ad

Wilson’s letter traced vaccines from George Washington’s troops to our own mothers enforcing polio summer naps. That history should humble us: it took two centuries of hard-won science to get here, and we’re unraveling it in real time. And not just at home, but abroad, where U.S. funding cuts have stripped accountability from Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, and left the Global Fund and PEPFAR underfunded.

Diseases don’t respect borders. When measles or TB resurge overseas, Dallas families aren’t insulated; we’re next. The bipartisan End Tuberculosis Now Act and full funding for Gavi and the Global Fund are proven, cost-effective ways to stop outbreaks before they reach us.

Sens. John Cornyn and Ted Cruz should champion these measures. Contact their offices today, before Thomas Paine’s warning about renouncing reason becomes our reality.

Bukekile Dube, Dallas/Turtle Creek

A very safe vaccine

I was an office-based pediatrician for nearly 50 years and have given thousands of doses of MMR vaccine to my patients and then, a generation later, to many of those patients’ children. Not one of those patients ever had a significant reaction or developed autism as a result of being vaccinated with MMR. In my experience, it is a very safe vaccine.

Malcolm D. Davidson, MD, Dallas

He disagrees

Re: “Always another side,” by Ken Ashby, Monday Letters.

Ashby pretends to be offering the flip side of a debate. Ignoring stated facts in a debate that completely refute one’s argument does not lend one credibility.

Dictating from a government level what ideas can be taught is radical, not the professors who opposed such censorship.

ICE has suspended due process and has murdered American citizens. The Dallas City Council pressuring them to obey the law is therefore not insurrection. However, what happened on Jan. 6 was an insurrection.

Texans spend less on health care because Texans don’t get health care. We have one of the lowest percentages of insured residents, and people can’t afford it. You can’t spend what you don’t have.

A well-rounded required reading list in schools is not authoritarian. However, violating the First Amendment by requiring the reading of Bible stories is authoritarian.

Making everyone pay the same tax bracket rate isn’t fair if the effective rate for the rich is lower than the effective rate for a poor family.

The Democratic Socialists of America is not in power in Congress and the House Minority Leader does not support it.

Shouldn’t we all read the definition of neo-fascism and see how it applies to today’s administration instead?

The U.S. Capitol in August 2025.
