Charley Crockett took to social media Tuesday to explain his side of a controversy that kicked off in July when he dropped self-described “satanic doo-wop” group Twin Temple from opening two shows on his tour. The Texas country singer and former Dallasite also called out a famous rocker.

“As for Jack White, he used it to sell tickets too and I lost a lot of respect for him,” Crockett wrote. “I wonder why he wasn’t so outspoken back when he was in the white stripes 20 something years ago.”

Crockett’s jab refers to White’s invite to Twin Temple to open for him after Crockett’s decision. The duo has been confirmed to open for White this September in Los Angeles.

White responded to Crockett online late on Tuesday.

“I never said nothing about this young buck before but since he’s trying to drag me into this here rodeo again, here’s my official response to Cowboy Charley’s accusations,” White posted.

What followed were verses from the 1984 hip-hop song Rappin’ Duke, which portrays actor John Wayne as a rapper. The selection includes references to rappers Kurtis Blow and Run D.M.C. as well as to then-President Ronald Reagan.

Crockett seemingly responded to White by posting a short clip of Marlon Brando in the 1961 film One-Eyed Jacks.

“You’re the one-eyed Jack around here man. I’ve seen the other side of your face,” Brando says.

After being dropped from a pair of West Coast shows in July, Twin Temple said Crockett removed them because of their satanic imagery.

Crockett disputed that characterization in his Tuesday post, saying the group “made it up” and that the decision came after some unusual production requests and seeing what they were doing onstage. Back in July, Crockett said in a statement: “I thought they were like Black Sabbath, but they ain’t. Not today, Satan.”

Twin Temple has since appeared on Comedy Central’s The Daily Show and is planning to release a new album, Doomed Lovers, in October.
