CLEAR LAKE, Texas \u2013 A Houston-area YouTuber was stabbed at a Clear Lake boat ramp while livestreaming \u2014 and he believes sharing his location may have made him a target.<\/p>\n
Austin Lewis, known online as Captain Crunch Boats, has built a following of more than 34,000 subscribers and 312 videos documenting boaters launching or loading their boats at local ramps. It\u2019s content that draws plenty of fans \u2014 but also, apparently, some enemies.<\/p>\n
Lewis says Sunday started like any other day at the dock. Then everything changed.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was having a conversation \u2014 the boater was yelling from across the parking lot after they pulled out,\u201d Lewis said. \u201cAs I was standing there arguing with him, somebody said, \u2018Look out\u2019 from behind me. I turned, and as I turned, that\u2019s when I saw the guy behind me with the knife.\u201d<\/p>\n
Lewis was stabbed. When he got a look at his attacker, the details stood out immediately.<\/p>\n
\u201cI realized he was fully masked up \u2014 he had a full balaclava on,\u201d Lewis said. \u201cAll I could see was his eyes. He had a black long-sleeve shirt to cover the top of his hands, black pants and brown boots.\u201d<\/p>\n
The level of concealment wasn\u2019t lost on Lewis. He believes the attack was premeditated \u2014 possibly by someone he had previously featured on his channel.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s very possible,\u201d Lewis said. \u201cI wouldn\u2019t rule it out at all. They were obviously watching the channel, in my opinion.\u201d<\/p>\n
This isn\u2019t the first time Lewis has faced danger doing what he loves. He says he has encountered numerous physical and verbal altercations over the years \u2014 and this wasn\u2019t even the first time someone pulled a knife on him at a boat ramp.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is the second time this has ever happened,\u201d Lewis said. \u201cFirst time I\u2019ve ever been stabbed.\u201d<\/p>\n
The attack has his family on edge \u2014 and has Lewis rethinking how he operates going forward.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy family has a lot of concern for my safety at the moment,\u201d he said. \u201cFor right now, I\u2019m not going to be going back down there and doing videos. Whenever I do go back, I\u2019m definitely going to be more cautious about livestreaming. I\u2019ll still go take static recordings, but livestreaming is going to be a hard one.\u201d<\/p>\n
The incident raises a broader question for the growing world of content creators \u2014 when does filming strangers in public cross into a safety risk, and how do you protect yourself?<\/p>\n
According to YouTube\u2019s own safety guidance, creators can take several steps to reduce their risk while streaming. Experts recommend reviewing chat logs for suspicious messages and blocking or reporting offenders, avoiding revealing personal identifiers such as names and locations during streams, using privacy settings to limit who can see your profile and past streams and limiting who can join your stream and view recordings.<\/p>\n
Lewis says the attack has changed his perspective \u2014 and hopes other creators take note before something similar happens to them.<\/p>\n
Authorities are still searching for the attacker. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Harris County Sheriff\u2019s office.<\/p>\n
