A new study links Houston traffic to a troubling national trend.

HOUSTON — Houston is the most dangerous city in the country for road rage, according to a new study from Texas personal injury law firm Angel Reyes & Associates. The firm analyzed 100 U.S. cities to determine which one deserves the title of the nation’s road rage capital, weighing factors like commute time, commute dissatisfaction, transportation network inefficiency, wasted time, shootings and reckless driving.

This story continues below.

Houston posted a Total Road Rage Score of 64.15, the highest in the country. The city’s Commute Dissatisfaction Score of 76 was among the contributors researchers pointed to, along with a Shooting Score of 36 and a Reckless Driving Score of 69.

Los Angeles came in second with a score of 63.25. Houston and Los Angeles were the only two cities in the study to score above 60 points.

Rounding out the top five were Chicago at third with a score of 56.35, Nashville at fourth with 56.25, and Miami at fifth with 56.15. Researchers noted that the third through fifth ranked cities all scored within 0.10 points of each other.

Philadelphia, Atlanta, Detroit, New York and Boston filled out the rest of the top 10, with scores ranging from 55.75 down to 51.85.

Road rage is defined as aggressive or violent behavior behind the wheel. The behavior can range from verbal insults to physical violence, and researchers say it reflects broader societal stress as much as it does traffic conditions.

The law firm pointed to a mix of societal, psychological and environmental factors driving the increase. Urban growth and traffic congestion are stretching commute times, while distractions from smartphones and in-car technology are leading to more driving errors and, in turn, more conflicts on the road. Researchers also cited lingering post-pandemic anxiety, economic stress, and aggressive driving behavior that has become normalized, in part because of social media.

Inconsistent enforcement of traffic laws is also a factor, according to the study, since drivers who face little to no consequence for reckless behavior are more likely to keep it up. Other contributors include the popularity of high-powered vehicles, emotional triggers such as aggressive music, and viral videos showing road rage incidents.

The firm said long stretches of stop-and-go traffic, frequent delays and time pressure all amplify negative emotions behind the wheel, and that drivers who feel a loss of control tend to grow impatient faster. Poorly timed traffic signals, construction zones and reckless driving from other motorists were also cited as factors that wear down drivers’ tolerance.

Driving conditions play a role too. Heavy rain, snow or fog can reduce visibility and heighten tension, while poorly maintained roads, lane closures and detours tend to frustrate drivers who are already fatigued or stressed. Even small perceived slights, like tailgating or unnecessary honking, can escalate into dangerous situations, according to the study.

Angel Reyes & Associates said combating the problem will require a combination of public education, stricter enforcement of traffic laws, and more patience and self-awareness from drivers.

Got a news tip or story idea?
