The Conservation Society of San Antonio is preparing to \u201chit the reset button\u201d on NIOSA, its longtime Fiesta party and largest annual fundraiser, after announcing plans that could significantly reshape the event next year.<\/p>\n
NIOSA, which averages more than $1 million annually, is expected to have a smaller footprint because of a 43% loss of space. The event will no longer have access to the Villita Assembly Hall and Maverick Plaza.<\/p>\n
Betty Bueche, president of the Conservation Society of San Antonio, said the organization is not worried about the possibility of moving the event and welcomed public feedback.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe’re not, disturbed at all about the possibility of moving… we really are pleased that the community is participating in their suggestions. It’s very helpful,\u201d Bueche said.<\/p>\n
Bueche said the changes are being considered for three main reasons: reduced space, rising costs and declining attendance.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe need to kind of, reimagine this event so that we can gain our attendance back again…. we need to look at all of those things,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
The announcement drew significant attention on the Conservation Society\u2019s Facebook page, where community members shared reactions and suggestions. Some called for improvements such as better parking or new events. Others voiced frustrations about overcrowding and a lack of affordable ways to enjoy the party.<\/p>\n
Bueche said the city has been working to utilize the La Villita area for public benefit, which the Conservation Society supports, and said any adjustments to NIOSA will need to account for those factors as planning for next year begins.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe want to be ready for all the new conditions and the new things in the world that everybody else is adjusting to,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
