accused of killing Sterling<\/a>. Gonzalez was already in custody on an unlawful firearm possession charge when police began investigating Sterling\u2019s death.<\/p>\nPolice also investigated Gonzalez in connection with another man\u2019s death at the same apartment complex. That case is separate from Sterling\u2019s murder case.<\/p>\n
According to court records, ballistic testing later connected a gun Gonzalez owned to shell casings found in connection with Sterling\u2019s shooting.<\/p>\n
Gonzalez told police he knew Sterling and had been to his apartment, but denied involvement in his death, according to court records.<\/p>\n
Now, after years of waiting, the case is headed to trial.<\/p>\n
Jury selection has been completed, and testimony is scheduled to begin Monday.<\/p>\n
Sterling\u2019s family is preparing for the emotional difficulty of seeing Gonzalez in court.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s something that we\u2019re really trying to mentally prepare ourselves for, just to see him in court,\u201d Bridget Sterling said. \u201cSeeing the person that took my brother\u2019s life is just, it\u2019s really hard.\u201d<\/p>\n
She said no court ruling can bring her brother back, but she wants Gonzalez held accountable if he is convicted.<\/p>\n
\u201cJustice would never bring my brother back,\u201d she said. \u201cSo justice for my family would be that Mr. Daniel Gonzalez stay behind bars and serve the rest of his life.\u201d<\/p>\n
As the family marks Sterling\u2019s birthday, Bridget said she is trying to focus on the person he was rather than the circumstances of his death.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen your sibling or your family members on this earth, you know, we live every day and we see them,\u201d she said. \u201cBut once they\u2019re gone \u2026 that\u2019s an unbearable, heart-wrenching feeling.\u201d<\/p>\n
If convicted in Sterling\u2019s death, Gonzalez faces up to life in prison.<\/p>\n
