{"id":413534,"date":"2026-08-22T04:22:16","date_gmt":"2026-08-22T04:22:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/413534\/"},"modified":"2026-08-22T04:22:16","modified_gmt":"2026-08-22T04:22:16","slug":"clear-the-shelters-east-texas-animal-shelters-look-to-lessen-intake","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/413534\/","title":{"rendered":"Clear the Shelters: East Texas animal shelters look to lessen intake"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"text | article-text\">LONGVIEW, Texas (KLTV) &#8211; The Longview Animal Care and Adoption Center is among many shelters across the country that participate in this national adoption campaign: Clear the Shelters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">And for places like Gregg County, with increasingly growing intake numbers, the event couldn\u2019t come at a better time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cIn my dream world, I wouldn\u2019t have a job,\u201d Longview Animal Care and Adoption Center Executive Director Jenna George said. \u201cIn a dream world, we would be in such a good place in Texas in general for animal welfare that there is not a need for large facilities at all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Since August 1, Longview Animal Care and Adoption Center has taken in 228 animals &#8212; not counting the population they already had.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cWe tend to stay at capacity pretty much every day,\u201d George said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">George said reasons for the high intake include a lack of spay and neutering &#8212; as well as an increasing number of pet surrenders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cFinances are hard, the economy is tough,\u201d George said. \u201cWe are running into cases where it is so unfortunate, but people are having to decide between their pets and paying a bill.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">George said the increasing intake outpaces the number of adoptions. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Around 38% of animals taken in since the start of the month have been adopted, between May and July there were 383 adoptions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cRight now we\u2019re having a really weird funk where we\u2019re seeing animals sit for weeks and months on end before anyone chooses to come in and adopt them,\u201d George said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Some concerns center around medical care costs for new pets &#8212; but Cody Stephenson said that\u2019s what drew him to the shelter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">After adopting a cat today, he said his mind is worry free.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cThey\u2019re already spayed or neutered. Already got the shots. It\u2019s already kind of adapted and 2-3 months old. Everything\u2019s taken care of. It\u2019s convenient,\u201d Stephenson said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Currently, the center has around 80 pets available for adoption.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Saturday\u2019s Clear the Shelter event hopes to beat last year\u2019s record of 32 adoptions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cThis year we are hoping to match that. We would prefer to beat it. All we can hope for is the privilege to be absolutely exhausted with all the kennels cleared,\u201d George said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The Longview Animal Care and Adoption Center is waiving adoption fees and letting new pet owners \u2018pay what you want\u2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The event lasts from 12-5pm on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Copyright 2026 KLTV.
