A Night in San Antonio will likely look very different next year, compared to the 2026 edition. San Antonio’s beloved Fiesta tradition could be smaller, it could be held somewhere other than La Villita and it might not even take place during Fiesta.<\/p>\n
These and other changes are all possibilities now that the Conservation Society of San Antonio, the nonprofit preservation group that produces NIOSA, announced a “reset” for the four-day fundraising event.<\/p>\n
The reset\u00a0is due to a convergence of factors, not the least of which is the amount of space available at La Villita, which has hosted NIOSA for more than 75 years.<\/p>\n
“The La Villita Assembly Hall was sold and is now privately owned, several restaurants are about to go under construction and the patio outside the assembly hall is not available,” explained Betty Bueche, president of the Conservation Society. “Together the amount of space we can use has been reduced by 43%.”<\/p>\n
Like many large festivals nationwide, NIOSA has seen\u00a0attendance drop sharply in recent years.<\/p>\n
“We’re down 48% since 2000,”\u00a0 said Bueche, who blamed trends such as waning interest in attending large, crowded events; safety concerns; and high ticket and food prices. “It’s only because we have less space at La Villita that it looks like attendance hasn’t dropped.”<\/p>\n
While NIOSA remains a significant fundraiser, its revenue has plummeted in recent years.<\/p>\n
“In the past, NIOSA has contributed as much as $1 million a year to our programs,” Bueche said. “But for the past couple of years, there have been no net revenues from NIOSA.”<\/p>\n
Bueche said she doesn’t know what the reset will look like, only that everything is on the table.<\/p>\n
“We have a very talented, experienced team looking at all our options,” she said.<\/p>\n
Among those options are reducing the size of the event, moving it elsewhere and scheduling it for another time of year. Bueche said she hopes to have a list of recommendations ready to present to the board within two months. The society’s Facebook page<\/a> is already receiving suggestions such as more vegetarian options, smaller affordable bites, limiting crowd size and less plastic waste.\u00a0<\/p>\n “Our goal is to keep NIOSA, NIOSA,” she said. “It is a beloved San Antonio tradition, so we are retooling to make sure that it continues as a successful fundraiser. We want people to know that when they come to\u00a0NIOSA, the dollars they spend contribute to supporting the programs that are important to everyone in San Antonio.”<\/p>\n This is not the first popular Fiesta event to hit pause. In 2026, Alamo Heights Night was canceled<\/a> due to declines in both attendance and revenues, according to the Alamo Heights Rotary Club president Rick Thorp.
