Benson Boone<\/a> couldn\u2019t take his eyes off the lights. Tiny little pinpricks in the immense darkness of the American Airlines Center<\/a> on Friday, Aug. 21, the multi-colored specks proved so interesting that after he finished \u201cMy Greatest Fear,\u201d he asked: \u201cWho brought these colored lights?\u201d<\/p>\n

A woman at the far end of the immense stage, which stretched nearly the full length of the arena floor, was the source, and the 24-year-old Boone was so moved he leaped down to wrap her in a fervent hug.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat is so sweet, such a special thing,\u201d he said, as the sold-out crowd roared and he swiped briefly at his eyes. \u201cSorry, I\u2019m emotional.\u201d<\/p>\n

For a moment, it seemed as though Boone himself might succumb to the naked vulnerability he\u2019d showcased throughout his set, leaning on feelings intimate in their specificity but universal in their application \u2014 the first blush of love; parental admiration and devotion; the bruised loneliness of a broken relationship \u2014 but he recovered.\u00a0<\/p>\n

On stage in North Texas for the second time in less than a year (he last appeared at Fort Worth\u2019s Dickies Arena<\/a> last September), Boone, touring behind his sophomore album, 2025\u2019s \u201cAmerican Heart,\u201d spent roughly 105 minutes Friday giving a capacity crowd everything it sought.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Relentlessly athletic \u2014 the bare-chested Boone\u2019s signature backflip punctuated multiple moments \u2014 and deliriously flashy (fireballs, confetti and an aerial interlude, among other eye-popping flourishes), Boone delivered much of his catalog to date, pulling from across his 2024 debut \u201cFireworks & Rollerblades\u201d (including, yes, his smash hit, the show closing \u201cBeautiful Things\u201d) as well as \u201cAmerican Heart.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Backed by a tight quartet of musicians (and augmented by backing tracks here and there), the singer-songwriter distilled multiple artistic inspirations \u2014 a pinch of Freddie Mercury, a dash of Elton John, a twist of Dan Reynolds \u2014 into something disarmingly sincere yet precisely calculated.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Boone gained entry into the mainstream through a dual attack on the 21st-century\u2019s primary pop music pipelines: reality TV<\/a> and social media. The former \u201cAmerican Idol\u201d contestant who pivoted to TikTok innately understands the need to hold the audience\u2019s eyes and keep a firm hand on the heartstrings to commandeer their affection.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Time and again Friday, you could see posters dotting the room, scrawled with passionate phrases which often yielded a wave or a wink from Boone, who seemed to spend as much time on the floor pressing the flesh as he did striking poses and belting on the stage, a sprawling behemoth featuring staircases and video screens.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The intensity of that relationship between fan and artist meant that from the moment he appeared, to the strains of \u201cSorry I\u2019m Here for Someone Else,\u201d the decibel level spiked \u2014 and stayed there. Such was the response that even Boone seemed taken aback, remarking late in the set: \u201cEvery night, the crowds are so different \u2014 dude, you guys are perfect, truly. Something about today is very special.\u201d (Maybe he says that to all the screaming arenas, but he certainly sold it well.)<\/p>\n

A heedless invincibility threaded through Boone\u2019s set \u2014 he flings himself off of most solid objects with an enviable abandon, landing firmly in his color-coordinated Adidas track shoes \u2014 which was tempered by pockets of poignancy.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The moving \u201cMomma\u2019s Song\u201d was a standout moment, as were the instances where Boone seated himself at a piano and stripped away everything but his razor-blade tenor, keening and sharp, as during \u201cTake Me Home,\u201d which, of course, ended with him standing atop the bedazzled grand piano as fireballs erupted on either side of him.\u00a0<\/p>\n

That, in a nutshell, is the Benson Boone experience: Songs which grab hold for a moment, but become an interchangeable blur after enough time, yet you\u2019re transfixed by the spectacle and showmanship.
