HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — There was a police chase in Houston that didn’t happen in a patrol unit, but instead in an Uber.<\/p>\n
The chase occurred earlier this month, when Houston Police Department officers entered a rideshare vehicle while pursuing a suspect, according to the department.<\/p>\n
HPD said officers responded to a call around midnight on Aug. 7 about a suspect threatening to shoot a woman and her kids in the Heights area.<\/p>\n
The department said that while officers were taking statements, the suspect left an apartment and began running away. That’s when the chase started, HPD said.<\/p>\n
An Uber driver caught the whole thing on camera and posted the video. But suddenly, the driver went from watching the chase to being a part of it.<\/p>\n
“Hey, give me a ride over there, please,” one of the officers told the Uber driver in the video.<\/p>\n
The dash camera footage then shows the inside of the car as the police officer got in and told the driver to pick up the other officer, who was also chasing the suspect.<\/p>\n
The second officer hopped in, directed the driver around the area, and about two minutes later they both got out, according to the video.<\/p>\n
HPD confirmed that during the foot pursuit, the officer saw the driver, who then gave them a ride around the block.<\/p>\n
The driver dropped the officers off, and they returned to their patrol vehicle to find the suspect but were unable to locate the person, according to HPD.<\/p>\n
ABC13 asked the department about its chase policy, and the department referred us to its website.<\/p>\n
HPD’s foot pursuit policy doesn’t address situations in which a vehicle is involved during a foot pursuit.<\/p>\n
The department’s motor vehicle pursuit policy says they can’t follow a vehicle if their police unit doesn’t have lights or sirens or is in a personal vehicle.<\/p>\n
Neither policy addresses this specific, unique situation.<\/p>\n
