Multiple reports state that it could not agree to lease-extension terms and cited ongoing sound and parking challenges with neighbors. Two days earlier, The Address, a Third Ward staple known for its lively Sunday parties, shut down after nine years in business.

I’m not surprised. I hear the same thing from regular folks trying to have a night out. The math doesn’t work anymore, and neither does the goodwill between these venues and the neighborhoods around them.

Houston City Council Member Mary Nan Huffman, whose District G includes Kamp’s former Westheimer location, told KHOU 11 that police had given officers noise meters and assigned a supervisor to handle complaints at the venue. She called Kamp “a drain on our public safety resources” in a statement following the closure. Her comments reflect years of tension between residents near increasingly dense entertainment corridors and the venues that draw thousands of visitors every weekend.

And they’re not folding because Houston stopped wanting to go out. They’re folding under a pile-up of pressures that have been building since 2020.

Prices for basically everything jumped nearly 24% between March 2020 and March 2025, and nightlife wasn’t exempt. IBISWorld now projects the entire U.S. bar and nightclub industry to flatline this year at around $38.6 billion in revenue, with profit margins sitting at a thin 5%. Running a club was never an easy business. It’s gotten a lot harder.

Houston’s version of that squeeze shows up most clearly in the rise of section culture, the practice of charging patrons a premium to reserve tables and bottle service instead of a simple cover charge to dance. At Kamp, that meant valet parking running $40 to $60 on top of a $25 general admission ticket, plus reserved sections that could cost patrons $200 up front and a two-bottle minimum near $400.

That shift carries costs beyond price. Houston clubgoers interviewed by the Defender described feeling priced out of a night out and pointed to the loss of the communal dance floor experience that once defined the city’s nightlife. Some have responded by building alternatives.

Kamp itself opened in the summer of 2020, a period when many venues sat closed, and others drew scrutiny, including from then-Mayor Sylvester Turner, over compliance with COVID-19 protocols. That era normalized outdoor and semi-outdoor formats, reservation-based cover charges, and a more transactional relationship between venues and customers that has never fully reversed.

None of these excuses real harm to residential neighbors. Noise, traffic, and parking complaints are legitimate, and cities have a real interest in enforcing ordinances that protect people trying to sleep in their own homes. But Houston also has an interest in protecting the Black-owned entertainment economy that has long served as a cultural anchor and job creator in these neighborhoods.

MORE FROM THE DEFENDER

Houston’s nightlife recently lost two of its most recognizable Black-owned gathering spaces in a single weekend, and the…

[7
144633,144634,56,4626,58,57,144635,67020,144636,144637,7669,6133
post-415124","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-houston","tag-chinedu","tag-district-g","tag-houston","tag-houston-city-council","tag-houston-headlines","tag-houston-news","tag-kamp-houston","tag-khou-11","tag-mary-nan-huffman","tag-the-address","tag-third-ward","tag-westheimer
["GET
