Texas firefighters battle massive ‘son of a buck’ wildfire<\/p>\n

The Ross Fire has torn through more than 78 square miles of rural Texas in less than a day, as powerful winds and bone-dry conditions turned the landscape into a tinderbox.<\/p>\n

The fire, burning about an hour outside of Fort Worth, moved so quickly it jumped creeks and rivers and destroyed at least five structures.<\/p>\n

Schools closed, middle-of-the-night evacuations were ordered and emergency officials warned the blaze could continue growing as temperatures climb this week.<\/p>\n

The Fort Worth area is already facing triple-digit heat and low humidity with winds of up to 25 mph (and even stronger gusts).<\/p>\n

That combination is a recipe for rapid fire growth, as winds can push flames across firebreaks, and carry embers ahead of the main fire.\u00a0<\/p>\n

And there\u2019s little relief in sight. Temperatures will stay in the low 80s overnight, meaning the fire gets almost no break from the heat.<\/p>\n

Wednesday is likely to bring more of the same weather, with highs forecasted near 108 degrees.<\/p>\n

Fire Chief Danny Watkins told the Associated Press<\/a> crews have \u201cthrown everything\u201d they have at the fire, but are still seeing little effect.<\/p>\n

Governor Greg Abbott announced that FEMA approved a Fire Management Assistance Grant for the Ross Fire.<\/p>\n

The exact cause remains under investigation.<\/p>\n

Texas isn\u2019t alone<\/p>\n

Wildfires have been popping up across the South and West for months as extremely dry conditions persist.<\/p>\n
