The\u00a0Bexar County jail has passed its second unannounced state inspection this year, another successful review after the facility faced scrutiny over in-custody deaths and previous compliance problems.<\/p>\n
The\u00a0Bexar County Sheriff’s Office announced Wednesday that the Adult Detention Center passed a comprehensive inspection conducted Aug. 18 and 19 by four inspectors from the Texas Commission on Jail Standards.<\/p>\n
The two-day inspection examined the jail’s operations, maintenance and inmate care protocols under the commission’s risk-based inspection model, which evaluates whether county jails meet state-mandated minimum standards.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe men and women of the\u00a0BCSO who work hard, literally 24\/7\/365 in the Bexar County Detention Center deserve a huge amount of credit in yet another passed inspection,\u201d Sheriff Javier Salazar said in a statement. \u201cWe also thank our Commissioner\u2019s Court and our partners in medical and maintenance\/facilities for their ongoing support.\u201d<\/p>\n
The latest inspection comes about six months after the jail passed another unannounced state review.<\/p>\n
Five\u00a0TCJS inspectors conducted that two-day review beginning Feb. 10, examining the detention center\u2019s operations, maintenance and inmate care.<\/p>\n
Inspectors identified two minor areas for improvement, but both were corrected on-site before the final briefing, according to\u00a0BCSO. The jail was ultimately found in full compliance, with no follow-up action required.<\/p>\n
The successful inspections come amid continued scrutiny of conditions and in-custody deaths at the jail. Seven people have died in custody at the\u00a0Bexar County jail so far this year.<\/p>\n
Twelve inmates died in custody in 2025, according to county records, following 13 in-custody deaths in 2024.<\/p>\n
The jail was also found out of compliance during separate state inspections in 2024 and 2025.\u00a0BCSO later corrected the deficiencies and regained compliance with state standards in both cases.<\/p>\n
