LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – There\u2019s plenty to see and witness when you step inside the Thomas A. Martin Youth Sports Complex.<\/p>\n
\u201cSixteen diamond fields used for baseball, softball and everything in between,\u201d operations superintendent Cori Branscum said. \u201cA lot of leagues, tournaments, outside groups coming in to use the facility.\u201d<\/p>\n
Since the beginning of August, construction crews have worked hard to transform the space. The biggest renovation to these 16 fields will be the placement of artificial turf. Fifteen will have artificial turf across the entire field, while grass will still be in the outfield for one field.<\/p>\n
Branscum says the hope with these renovations is more tournaments and leagues will make their way to south Lubbock to compete and bring entertainment to the area.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s home for a lot of people to come out on a Saturday or a weekend tournament and come enjoy the atmosphere,\u201d Branscum said. \u201cBeing around teams, being around competitive nature. It\u2019s a positive environment.\u201d<\/p>\n
More than anything else, these renovations are giving kids the best chance to succeed and have fun in this environment.<\/p>\n
\u201cNow we don\u2019t have to worry about hot spots, dead spots in the grass, irrigation leaks that could postpone a game or something of that sort,\u201d Branscum said. \u201cNow we can control more and allow the teams to be out on the fields more efficiently.\u201d<\/p>\n
Crews are looking to finish construction by the beginning of March, just in time for spring ball. While there might be some hurdles to overcome along the way, Branscum hopes everyone can come out when construction finishes to experience the joys the diamond has to offer.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese guys are doing a great job,\u201d Branscum said. \u201cThey\u2019re trying to hit it hard, hit it fast and get ahead of everything.\u201d This is going to be a beautiful sight to see and it\u2019s just going to be so enjoyable for the community, just knowing that this is here in Lubbock. You don\u2019t have to go out of town; you don\u2019t have to go out to the Metroplex to find this. It\u2019s right here in our backyard.\u201d<\/p>\n
