NEW YORK\u00a0\u2014 Houston Astros<\/a> third baseman Carlos Correa is progressing well enough in his rehab from left ankle surgery that manager Joe Espada said Wednesday he could \u201cexpect him to be ready to go at some point in September.\u201d<\/p>\n

Correa, who sustained the injury hitting in the cage, was cleared to resume swinging a bat in the first week of August. On Sunday, during an in-game TV interview on Space City Home Network, Correa said he\u2019d progressed to hitting against a pitching machine and would be taking ground balls at third base this week.<\/p>\n

During the Astros\u2019 last\u00a0homestand, Correa ran sprints and curves on the outfield grass pregame. He said in his in-game interview Sunday he was scheduled for another doctor\u2019s appointment \u201cin a week\u201d which could determine his next steps.<\/p>\n

Espada said Wednesday that Correa was due for another appointment in the first week of September.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut so far, all the reports, all the work he\u2019s doing, he continues to improve,\u201d Espada said. \u201cAnd once he gets that doctor visit, maybe we can start cranking up some stuff where we can see him really getting after it on the field.\u201d<\/p>\n

Correa posted a .279\/.369\/.418 slash line in 32 games this season before the injury, playing both third base and shortstop when Jeremy Pe\u00f1a was sidelined by a hamstring injury. Pe\u00f1a is active and Houston reinstalled Isaac Paredes as the everyday third baseman after losing Correa.<\/p>\n

Espada said Wednesday he has not begun to consider how the roster might adjust if Correa can return this year. The Astros began the day with a half-game lead in the American League West over Texas and 30 games left in their regular season.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne day at a time,\u201d Espada said.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Right-hander Mike Burrows was scheduled to make a third Triple-A rehab start Wednesday in his recovery from elbow neuritis. Burrows compiled nine scoreless innings in his first two rehab starts for Triple-A Sugar Land, but the\u00a0Astros still opted to have him make another one. Espada noted that with rosters expanding Sept. 1, the Astros will be able to add an additional pitcher next Tuesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe wanted to keep him on schedule, get him another start, build him up,\u201d Espada said. \u201cAnd then we could make a decision coming up here once he pitches tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2022 Outfielder Brice Matthews still has yet to run the bases or face live pitching in his recovery from a left knee sprain, Espada said.
