In an ALICE household, two adults with two children who attend daycare, those wages should be about $76,000. So that’s a big gap, about $43,000, and just simply does not meet up with today’s current standards,” Adams said.

That’s what makes it difficult for people to financially survive, Adams said, because most do not qualify for federal benefits, and must work multiple jobs to make ends meet.

Adams says most of those families are left to make difficult choices.

“Do I get my prescription filled or do I buy groceries for my family? Do I get those shoes for my child, or do I get gas in the car?” Adams explained.

That’s where area resources come into play. Lubbock Area United Way has 22 partner nonprofits, all of which are dedicated to serving those in need across the South Plains.

“ALICE individuals don’t want to slip back into poverty, they want to move out of poverty,” Adams said. “It affects not only them but their children, their neighbors, schools, places of worship. It’s a free line that will connect you with resources across the area. No matter where you are, you can call and get referrals to local health and community services.

Adams says United Way’s goal is to help individuals in need, in an effort to lift the community as a whole up.

“The beautiful thing about the Lubbock community and the region is that we rally around our people,” Adams said. “It’s about looking towards those that are our neighbors and the future to change the narrative of what it means to live in West Texas.”

Lubbock Area United Way is kicking off its annual campaign on Thursday.
