Trash pickup will have an altered schedule, meaning that solid waste will be collected (gross) on Tuesday and Wednesday, September 8 and 9, rather than Monday and Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Speaking of trash, both Lubbock landfills<\/a> will be closed on Labor Day as well. This also goes for attended drop-off stations.<\/p>\n Lubbock has several public libraries<\/a> that, you guessed it, will all be closed on Labor Day, September 7. The Silent Wings Museum<\/a> and the Garden & Arts Center<\/a> will also be closed all day.<\/p>\n All community and senior centers will be closed for the holiday as well; however, the Burgess-Rushing Tennis Center<\/a> will remain open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Labor Day.<\/p>\n You know what else will remain open on Labor Day? The Buddy Holly Center<\/a>! If you didn’t know, Buddy Holly’s birthday happens to be September 7, 1936. As a result, the Center will be open\u00a0 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. to celebrate the iconic singer’s 90th birthday.<\/p>\n Why Celebrate Labor Day?<\/p>\n We hear it every year, and kids rely on it to gauge when the school year kicks off, but what is Labor Day actually about?<\/p>\n We know neither the exact founder nor the exact date of the first holiday, but we typically treat September 5, 1882<\/a>, as the first Labor Day. This was when thousands of union members marched to Union Square in New York City as they demanded shorter workdays.<\/p>\n Prior to this, industrial workers were often subjected to 7-day work weeks at 70+ hours each week.
