EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The family of 36-year-old April Marie Flores is remembering her as a loving mother, daughter and older sister after she was killed in a stabbing at a Northeast El Paso apartment complex earlier this week.

Flores was a mother of eight whom her family says loved spending time with her children and family.

“She was always laughing. She was always joking. She loved to talk,” her sister, Ashley, told KTSM 9 News. “She could sit and talk to you for hours upon hours and always have something to say.”

But of the many roles Flores had in her life, her family says being a mother was among the most important to her.

“She was a great mom. All her kids love her very much,” Ashley said. “She had a very strong relationship with all her children.”

Flores had recently started working as a caregiver for an elderly woman in Northeast El Paso.

On Tuesday morning, Aug. 25, Flores was working at the Patriot Palms Apartments when police say she was attacked and stabbed multiple times. She was taken to a hospital, where she later died.

According to court documents, 35-year-old Shaloni Mariah Wallace, the daughter of the woman Flores was caring for, had previously served as her mother’s caregiver.

Wallace’s mother told investigators Wallace suddenly began attacking Flores. Police later arrested Wallace, who is now charged with murder.

For Flores’ family, the reality of losing her is still sinking in as they also try to help her children cope with the loss of their mother.

“Everybody is really emotional,” Ashley said. “And her kids are taken back, trying to help them navigate. This is going to be one of the hardest things that we all do for them.”

Flores’ family has created a GoFundMe to help cover funeral expenses and provide support for her younger children.
